SLCC gears up for NJCAA opener
By Patrick Sheltra
For The Salt Lake Tribune
Updated: 03/16/2009 07:06:43 PM MDT
HUTCHINSON, Kan. -- Try as he might, Salt Lake Community College coach Norm Parrish doesn't remember much about Shelton State (Ala.) from last year's trip to the NJCAA men's national basketball tournament. And with good reason.
While SLCC kept advancing through the winner's bracket and evening games to the title game, which it lost to South Plains (Texas), the Buccaneers' stay in Kansas was short as it went two-and-out in the double-elimination tournament.
"I've been racking my brain trying to remember them," Parrish said.
One year later, Parrish has plenty of reason to believe sight unseen that Shelton State will provide a stiff test for his Bruins (27-6) when they open the tournament today at 1 p.m. MDT. The Buccaneers enter the tournament winners of 31 straight games after two losses in a Mississippi tournament to open the season.
"I don't know if we could win 31 in a row against anybody," Parrish said. "Obviously, they're used to winning."
So too are the Bruins, who replaced their entire starting five, yet won the Region 18 title and stamped their ticket to Hutchinson for just the third time in program history by defeating Arizona Western in the District 1 championship game.
The Bruins are led by Regional 18 MVP D.J. Wright, who had signed with Louisiana Tech and former Univeristy of Utah interim head coach Kerry Rupp. He averages 17.7 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.
Shelton State, meanwhile, had to suffer through an expected reduction in its roster earlier this month when four players were injured in a car accident en route home from a fishing trip. One of the players, 5-9 sophomore guard Trevell Coleman, was able to play in all three games of the Bucs' run to the Region 22 title.
However, the Bucs' fortunes run through a balanced lineup that features five players averaging between 9.2 and 13.7 points per game.
