What is the program about
The automotive technologies program is designed to train students in both domestic and import vehicle diagnosis and repairs.  It prepares students to enter into the job market as technicians skilled in all facets of automotive repair.

As an automotive technician student at SLCC
you will learn:
  • Brakes, suspension, steering & alignment
  • Electrical/electronic systems
  • Engine performance/drivability
  • Emission controls
  • Heating and air-conditioning
  • Automotive engines
  • Transmission and drive train systems
  • Diagnostics and review


How long does it take
The AAS automotive technologies degree is a four-semester program and requires a minimum of 70 hours. 

How much will it cost
Regular Tuition
Estimated cost of tools & supplies = $2,000*
Estimated cost of books = $720

*Technicians are required to furnish their own hand tools.  Employers furnish engine analyzers and specialized test equipment and tools for servicing service units such as automatic transmissions. Click here for a list of required tools.


What are the facilities like
SLCC’s automotive program is located in two locations on the Larry H. Miller Campus in Sandy –

  • Electrical and engine repair training is located in the Miller Free Enterprise Center. 

  • Engine performance, transmission, heating and air conditioning training is located in the Miller Automotive Training Center.

SLCC Miller Campus has its own NAPA auto parts center located in the Miller Free Enterprise Center.  Faculty, staff and students may call Wayne Smith, at (801) 957-5329 to purchase parts or to schedule an appointment for vehicle repairs.

The Miller Campus was donated to Salt Lake Community College by Larry H. Miller, owner of the Utah Jazz, the Salt Lake Bees and a number of automotive related businesses throughout the Intermountain West.


What make the program unique
Students have the opportunity to learn in a true-to-life vehicle service environment.  As part of the training for the program, vehicle repairs are performed by automotive students. 
This service is available to faculty, staff and students.

What is the faculty like

Brett Baird is Assistant Professor of Automotive Electrical and Engine Repair.  Brett has nine years experience as a journeyman automotive technician.  He was the National Director of Technical Training for 5 years and has 19 years experience as an automotive instructor at SLCC.  Brett is ASE master certified and has GM, Ford, Chrysler and Honda certifications.

Mike Millet is Assistant Professor of automatic & manual transmissions and heating & air conditioning.  He has over forty two years experience as an automotive technician, shop owner and manager.  Mike has been an automotive technology instructor with SLCC for over sixteen years.  Mike.Millet@slcc.edu

Vince Badger is Assistant Professor of automotive steering/suspension and brakes.  He is also journeyman technician of import and domestic vehicles.  He came to SLCC with 6 years experience at Harry Luff Motor Company, one year at Goodyear Tire Company and one year with Granite School District maintenance.  He has over 25 years teaching experience with SLCC.
