Concurrent Enrollment Overview

Mission Statement

The Salt Lake Community College Concurrent Enrollment Program provides leadership in maintaining partnerships with secondary education institutions that offer high school students the opportunity to earn college credit and high school credit concurrently as they enroll in and complete college-level courses offered either at Salt Lake Community College or an approved high school campus.

Definition

Concurrent Enrollment (CE) classes are college-level classes usually offered at the high school to junior and senior students during their regular school day. High school students reduce duplication of classes and save time and money by earning both high school and college credits at the same time. College credits are recorded on a permanent college transcript. Tuition is not charged to students.

Instructors are qualified high school faculty who meet the Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) hiring requirements for adjunct faculty. Instructor qualifications, syllabi, assignments, textbooks, exams, and grading requirements are equivalent to those at the College. Classes are monitored by liaisons from SLCC. Students must demonstrate college readiness with appropriate placement test scores.

On Campus Concurrent Enrollment

Salt Lake Community College provides an opportunity for high school students to take Concurrent Enrollment classes. On-campus Concurrent Enrollment enables students to take tuition-free classes during the school year in the evenings and during the summer. Students receive credit toward high school graduation and a college degree at the same time. For more information, see our web site, www.slcc.edu/concurrentenrollment. Students must demonstrate college readiness with appropriate placement test scores.

Early Enrollment

Students who are juniors or seniors in high school may qualify to take classes on campus at SLCC through the Early Enrollment program. Full tuition and fees will be charged, plus the cost of books; no financial aid or scholarships are available through the College. Credit earned through Early Enrollment may count for both college and high school credit; however, students must meet with their high school counselor regarding acceptance of these credits toward high school graduation.

Admission is based upon test scores submitted. In order to be admitted, students must demonstrate college readiness by placing into ENGL 1010 and MATH 1010. SLCC pre-requisites and requirements apply to all courses taken.

Interested students should visit the Early Enrollment website at www.slcc.edu/earlyenrollment before obtaining required documents. On the website there is a checklist (under “Student Checklist”) of documents students are required to submit to an Early Enrollment advisor BEFORE THE DEADLINE. Deadlines are posted on the website.

These documents include: current ACT or Accuplacer test scores, a complete high school transcript, letter of permission (on letterhead) from high school counselor, vice principal or principal, signed parent permission form (http://www.slcc.edu/earlyenrollment/docs/parent_permission_form.pdf ), regular (non-concurrent) SLCC admission application, nonrefundable $40 application fee, and driver license or state ID.

For complete information and required forms, please visit the Early Enrollment website listed above. To schedule an appointment with an advisor, please call 801-957-4844 or 801-957-4215. High school juniors and seniors interested in registering for any non-concurrent distance education course must be admitted through Early Enrollment and pay regular tuition and fees.
