Instructor Responsibilities

Teacher Evaluations

Syllabus - Instructors are required to submit a class syllabus to Peggy Sadler, Director, for each course, each semester, each year. The syllabus may be attached to an email to ann.davidson@slcc.edu or peggy.sadler@slcc.edu. The syllabus may also be submitted in person or by mail. A sample syllabus is available here.

IAS Course Evaluations - All Concurrent Enrollment instructors are required to participate in the Instructional Assessment System (IAS), an evaluation that is administered for all SLCC courses, including CE courses. Evaluations occur generally once a year for each different course taught. The evaluations are distributed by the high school coordinator through the SLCC Office of Institutional Research, 801-957-4110.

Cooperation with the SLCC Liaison - Please facilitate the SLCC department liaison classroom visits for the purpose of collegial interaction and the discussion of SLCC course curriculum

Professional Development - In order to meet national Concurrent Enrollment accreditation standards, SLCC must require concurrent teachers to attend four hours of professional development every year. Seminars and workshops are offered by SLCC for CE instructors. They may be special CE meetings, content-specific meetings, or department faculty meetings. All CE instructors are invited to the annual Adjunct Faculty Conference, held the third Saturday in October, and the SLCC Faculty Convention held in April each year. CE instructors are required to participate in four (4) hours of college-sponsored or college-approved professional development each year. Instructors who are unable to attend can make up 2 hours by reviewing this online instructor handbook and taking a short quiz. These two hours however, will not be paid. SLCC Parking

CE Instructors who visit the Taylorsville Redwood Road Campus frequently may purchase SLCC parking permits. Daily parking validations for the Visitor Parking Lot are available at the CE Office in ATC 228 or 224. Parking Services will ticket cars with SLCC permits using the Visitors’ Lot, even if the permit is not showing in the car.

Class Size

Class size is limited for the following courses:

  • Communications . . . . 28 students
  • English . . . . . . . . . . . 25 students
  • Humanities . . . . . . . . 35 students
  • Math . . . . . . . . . . . . . 40 students

Mixed enrollments of CE students and non-CE students are acceptable for certain career/technical courses but are not allowed for general education or School of Business courses (see division/department headings under “Courses” for general education status). ART 1600 and CIS 1020 must have a minimum of 80% of the students registered with for Concurrent Enrollment SLCC.

Teaching Load

The teaching load for each Concurrent Enrollment instructor is a maximum of 11 credit hours per semester or 22 SLCC credit hours per year. This is a quality of instruction requirement. There will be no exceptions.

Contact Hours

In order to maintain the quality and comparability of CE courses, course material will not be taught in fewer hours than an on-campus SLCC course. CE instructors will coordinate with their SLCC liaisons on required contact hours. For example, a two-credit-hour course is taught in a minimum of 30 contact hours, and a three-credit-hour course is taught in a minimum of 45 contact hours.

Student Teachers & Substitute Teachers

Student teachers are not allowed to teach CE classes because they have not been approved by the College and usually don’t meet College hiring requirements. The CE Office recommends that student teachers work with high school teachers who are not teaching Concurrent Enrollment. However, student teachers may observe CE classes.

Substitute teachers may teach CE classes for a few days if they have adequate curriculum information from the approved teacher. If the approved teacher is unable to teach for more than two (2) weeks, the substitute must be qualified to teach according to SLCC hiring requirements. SLCC will review the long-term substitute teacher’s transcripts and resume and document the approval status.

If the substitute teacher is not approved or a qualified long-term substitute teacher is not available, the students may not receive CE credit. The high school must notify the students and parents of the circumstances and tell them that CE credit is in question at the first sign of doubt. SLCC will assist the high school by confirming the policy to students and parents by letter or in a meeting.
