Salt Lake Community College announces a new opportunity for high school students to take Concurrent Enrollment classes.  On-Campus Concurrent Enrollment enables students to take classes after school at the college. The classes will be offered at several Salt Lake Community College campuses.  Students will still get credit toward high school graduation and a college degree.

Please read through the following information and decide if this option is right for you.

  • Students who have completed 10th or 11th grade (or will complete 10th grade in June 2008) are eligible for On-Campus Concurrent Enrollment.  Seniors who will graduate from high school in June 2008 and students who will start 10th grade in fall 2008 are not eligible.
  • Students who have completed 10th or 11th grade and are still in high school are eligible for On-Campus Concurrent Enrollment.
  • Many courses will mix high school students with adult students in the same class.
  • Classes will be taught by College faculty and follow the college schedule.
  • We recommend 3 to 6 credit hours and will allow a maximum of 9 credit hours in this program.
  • There is no charge for tuition, however you are responsible to provide your own transportation, supplies, books and fees. o   You must be able to attend classes according to the College schedule.  Students will not be excused from college classes to participate in high school activities.
  • Attendance is vital. If you will miss more than 2 consecutive classes, make arrangements with the teacher in advance or consider withdrawing from the class.
  • You must submit the completed registration form signed by a high school counselor or administrator and the signed Student and Parent/Guardian Memorandum of Understanding. Students who register for classes but fail to submit these forms to the Concurrent Enrollment office by the first day of class will be dropped from class.
  • Expect at least two (2) hours of homework outside of class for every hour you spend in class.

New Century Scholarship

SLCC advisors will help students map out and create an associate degree plan as a guideline for students to follow; however changes in this plan may occur if Concurrent Enrollment classes do not carry at the high schools, students do not follow course work suggested on the plan, and/or grade requirements are not met for prerequisite courses and for transfer purposes. The student is responsible for ensuring that all college requirements are met, seeking out additional courses or alternatives is needed, and for applying for SLCC graduation and scholarships, if applicable.

What if I have a concern regarding my Concurrent Enrollment grade and/or instructor?

Only the teacher can change a grade. Appeals for grade changes will be accepted for three years after the last day of the class in question. What does Academic Honesty mean?

Honesty is an expectation at Salt Lake Community College. This means that each member of the College community will adhere to the principles and rules of the College and pursue academic work in a straightforward and truthful manner, free from deception or fraud.  Any attempt to deviate from these principles is academic dishonesty and will be dealt with according to rules of due process as outlined.

What are the consequences of cheating in a Concurrent Enrollment class?

Concurrent enrollment students are first and foremost high school students. Public education guidelines and rules apply to them when there is a question. Every attempt should be made to resolve issues of academic dishonesty within the high school and school district. An appeal through the SLCC Student Code of Conduct may only be pursued after the public education options have been exhausted. The SLCC Student Code of Conduct contains college standards and procedures. The following excerpts are quoted from the Student Code of Conduct:

Sanctions for Academic Dishonesty

In cases of academic dishonesty, faculty members may impose one or more of the following sanctions:
Failing the assignment in which the infraction occurred Failing the certification of competency in the area in which the infraction occurred Failing the course in which the infraction occurredIn addition, in cases where academic dishonesty has been repeated or is of an especially serious nature, the faculty member should notify his/her Academic Administrator and the Director of Student Life and Leadership of the action taken. If the alleged violation occurs during the final examination period of the term, the faculty member may assign the student an I grade to indicate a problem or incomplete work at final time. This grade will remain unchanged until the alleged violation is adjudicated.

What if my test scores dont place me into the English or Math course I want to take?

Unqualified students are not allowed to remain in Math and English classes. Students may take the class into which they place if its offered for Concurrent Enrollment credit, such as taking Math 1010 if they dont place into for Math 1050.

What accommodations are available for disabled Concurrent Enrollment students?

The SLCC Disability Resource Center (DRC) services are available to Concurrent Enrollment students. http://www.slcc.edu/pages/1791.asp Telephone (801) 957-4659, TTY: (801) 957-4646, Fax: (801) 957-4947, Email: Linda.Bennett@slcc.edu.High School juniors and seniors who want to take Concurrent Enrollment classes can get help with the application process, meaning help with communication and access issues (interpreters, scribes, readers, help with whatever they might need to complete the application and registration process).    For classroom or education-related accommodations, the student must bring medical documentation, which the DRC reviews in order to determine eligibility.  The student must come to our office and ask for assistance.  Services are not provided until an ADA eligibility decision has been made. All authorized accommodations will be in the form of a letter from us to the instructor (brought by the student to the instructor). It requires signatures of our staff, the student and the instructor.  If the instructor does not get a letter from us- no accommodations are authorized and none should be provided.  Instructors must not provide accommodations on their own, even if the student asks.  Legally everything must go through the DRC.  If instructors get requests or suspect someone has a disability they should suggest that a visit to the DRC might be helpful.

How many concurrent credits can I take in high school?

Utah State Office of Education policy limits students to 30 concurrent enrollment credits per year, including classes from SLCC and all other universities and colleges. SLCC policy limits students to 20 credit hours per semester from SLCC, including Concurrent Enrollment, distance education and early enrollment.

Does a D grade transfer?

What grade is considered passing? At SLCC a D- grade is considered passing unless a minimum grade requirement is specified by the major or required as a prerequisite.Transfer institutions vary in the minimum grade required for transfer credit to be accepted, please check directly with the institution where you will be transferring your SLCC credit.

What is a W grade?

A Withdraw or W grade doesn't affect a students GPA. It can affect the students eligibility for financial aid. Some types of financial aid require that a student complete 70% of the courses attempted. Classes with W grades are classified as not completed.

What is an E grade?

At SLCC an E is a failing grade, the same as an F in high school.

What are qualifying placement scores?

Students wishing to take English or Math must submit qualifying placement test scores:

MATH 1010                ACT math score 18 OR CPT algebra score 54
MATH 1040                ACT math score 23 OR CPT college level math score 43
MATH 1050                ACT math score 23 OR CPT college level math score 43
MATH 1060                CPT college level math score 70-90 (ACT score not used)
ENGL 1010                 ACT reading score 20 OR CPT reading score 81

After being admitted to SLCC students may take the first CPT English and math test for free. Additional tests are $15 for English and $15 for math.

Math scores are valid and may be used for placement for one year. Math tests may be re-taken once per semester.

English scores are valid and may be used for placement for two years. English tests may be re-taken once per year. A C grade or better in a pre-requisite course will qualify a student to enroll in the next course in sequence. Example:

A C in Math 1010 will qualify a student to take MATH 1050 within one year of completing MATH 1010.
