Solar Photovoltaic Installation Training

Learn how to assemble and install Photovoltaic panels
and systems with hands-on training

Growing demand for solar energy and energy efficiency is helping to create new "green" jobs in Utah.  Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) is offering training geared toward this emerging workforce.  The college offers two Solar Photovoltaic Systems courses through Continuing Education.  To register for classes, call (801) 957-5200.

Class will cover basic topics associated with the design and installation of Photovoltaic systems.  This course offers state-of-the-art curriculum and experienced, NABCEP Certified professionals.

Basic Solar PV Installation
Next Session Begins:
Jan. 12, 2010
Tuition: $499
Textbook: $80*
Tuesday and Thursday
6:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Meadowbrook Campus Bldg. B. 206
250 W. 3900 South
This course introduces students to the basic principles of Photovoltaic system design. Students will learn how to conduct site evaluations, prepare a basic electrical and mechanical design, select appropriate components and determine sizing of: PV arrays, battery banks, inverters, and charge controllers. Thirty hours of instruction will be provided.   Students who successfully complete this class will be eligible to take NABCEP's (North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners) Entry Level Certificate of Knowledge exam**. This class is preparatory to the more advanced knowledge and experience needed to obtain full NABCEP certification and becoming a licensed solar contractor in the State of Utah.
Advanced Solar PV Installation
Next Session Begins:
April 16, 2010
Tuition: $999
Textbook: $80*
Tuesday and Thursday
6:00pm - 9:00 pm
Meadowbrook Campus Bldg. B. 206
250 W. 3900 South
This course builds upon the foundation of knowledge students acquire in the Basic Photovoltaic Systems course. After successful completion of course work in both the Basic and Advanced classes and additional field work, students will be able to: safely work with photovoltaic systems; conduct site assessments; select appropriate system designs; adapt mechanical designs; adapt electric designs; install sub-systems and components on-site; perform system checkouts and inspections; maintain and troubleshoot photovoltaic systems. Students will tour active sites and have hands on experience with a grid tied system as well as an off grid system. These classes, in combination with NABCEP required field experience, will qualify students to sit for the NABCEP PV Installer Certification examination*, after which they can apply for a State of Utah S202 license.*.

*The same textbook is used for both the Basic Photovoltaic Systems course and the Advanced Photovoltaic Systems Course.
In addition, the National Electrical Code Handbook is required for the Advanced course.
