The Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills Competition is co-sponsored by AAA and the Ford Motor Company. The competition is designed to encourage talented young people to pursue careers as automotive service technicians. AAA and Ford are wholeheartedly committed to this program as an investment in the future training of our young people, which will, in turn, provide improved automotive service for AAA members, Ford Motor Company customers and all motorists. HANDS-ON COMPETITION: In the "hands-on" competition, 10 new Ford Motor Company vehicles provided by Hertz Rental Cars are uniformly "bugged" so that each team has identical malfunctions to diagnose and repair. JOB PLACEMENT: Approximately 80 % of the graduates of the SLCC Automotive Tech program go on to become ASE Certified in one or more areas of automotive Repair. Most students in the Automotive Program are employed by our Automotive Repair industry supporters before they even complete the program. We have many recent graduates who transferred their AAS degree to Weber State University, completed Baccalaureate requirements, and now work on “the hot line” for Ford Motor Company in Dearborn Michigan. One of our most recent graduates to accomplish this was a Ford /AAA participant. Another of our Ford/AAA participants recently completed a successful career as an engine performance service technician at Willey Ford in Bountiful, and is now beginning a new career as the Automotive Instructor at Hunter High School. |

IMPROVED SERVICE & COMMUNITY BENEFITS: When an automotive dealership has competent employees, the service is a great economic benefit to the local community. Competent and well trained technicians insure the safety of our community by properly servicing and repairing the complicated systems of our vehicles. Technicians make vehicles safe to operate on our streets, when they take pride in applying the knowledge gained in SLCC’s Automotive Program, through servicing anti-lock brakes, active suspension and air bags. A well done brake job saves lives. But it doesn’t stop there. SLCC’s Automotive graduates are taught to handle hazardous chemicals and automotive wastes in a manner friendly to our environment. For example, each of our students will graduate with a certification in refrigerant recovery and each student is taught the danger that automotive air conditioning refrigerants pose to the earth’s ozone layer if handled improperly. |
