We offer a wide range of writing workshops here at the Community Writing Center. Explore a variety of writing topics in theme-based classes. Past workshops include: Letters to the Editor, Poetry, Memoir, Editing Tips, College Application Essays, Journaling and Creative Writing. Workshops are created in response to community requests and are taught by our talented Writing Assistants. If there's a workshop you'd like us to offer in the future, please let us know by email: cwc@slcc.edu
Most workshops take place at the Community Writing Center. Due to limited space, it is necessary to register in advance if you plan to attend a workshop. Registration will close one hour prior to the scheduled event. Registrants who choose to not to attend should call to cancel one week prior to the workshop; after this time payments are non-refundable.

The mind of a child is a fascinating place, full of unique insights and opinions ... especially when it comes to favorite reads. This workshop will engage young readers to write book reviews and to then share with other children (and through the city library publications). This workshop is most effective if he/she brings a favorite text for review. Space limited to ages 7 to 12.

1-day youth workshop May 2 (Sa) |
Sudden fiction, microfiction, postcard fiction, haibun, nanofiction, vignette ... Can you tell a story using less than 1000 words? Less than 500? Less than 100? Explore character, conflict, setting and dialogue while finding ways to condense and strengthen your words. This two-session workshop will assist writers in discovering methods to present a large idea within a small amount of space.

Listening is one way to celebrate one another's lives and to better understand history and humanity. Please join the CWC, in partnership with YourStory (yourstory.utah.edu), to record interviews with friends or loved ones and then turn those recording into written personal histories or family stories. This three-session workshop works best if a friend or relative registers for the workshop with you.

Write about a beautiful and simple necessity: food. It doesn't matter whether you're a chef, writer or just a good eater, food has metaphorical and transformative qualities. In this workshop, we'll share food history and heritage, recipes and anecdotes, while finding inspiration and creativity in the process.

Stressed out? Life getting on your nerves? Today's world is full of stresses and anxieties that are both immediate and long-term. we all need to take a break from it, but not everyone has the time (or money) to go on vacation to get away from it all. What we need are no-cost strategies to help us through the trying times. For some, writing can be a great stress-manager, and not just making lists (in fact, lists can create more stress than they take away!). Come to this high energy workshop that will give you new skills in how to use writing to keep on going when the anxiety gets too high.

Train to be a volunteer at the SLCC Community Writing Center! Learn the tools necessary to be an effective writing assistant — as a Writing Coach, Writing Group Mentor or Workshop Facilitator.
