ESL Discipline Mission:

The mission of the English as a Second Language Discipline at Salt Lake Community College is to provide learning experiences that will promote greater student success and satisfaction in their personal, professional and academic pursuits, with a focus on the development of language and study skills that are necessary for success in college studies.

ESL Discipline Goals:

ESL Level 4 courses at SLCC are designed to assist non-native English speaking students in achieving the following goals:

  1. Improvement in the following English language skills:
    1. Speaking (ESL 1010)
    2. Listening (ESL 1010)
    3. Reading (ESL 1020)
    4. Writing (ESL 1020)
  2. Refinement in the following language areas:
    1. Conversational skills (ESL 1010, 1030)
    2. Pronunciation (ESL 1010, 1060)
    3. Grammar (ESL 1020, 1040)
    4. Vocabulary (ESL 1010, 1020, 1050)
  3. Improvement in the students’ abilities to engage in the following college classroom activities:
    1. Giving oral presentations (ESL 1010, 1030)
    2. Taking notes from lectures (ESL 1010)
    3. Writing essays (ESL 1020)
    4. Reading textbooks (ESL 1020)
    5. Discussing course topics (ESL 1010, 1020)
