Frequently Asked QuestionsStudents are welcome to stop by Salt Lake Community College’s Student Express on the Redwood Campus anytime. Student Express, located on the second floor of the Student Center, can provide the information to help students get enrolled and oriented to SLCC. The Student Express staff can provide you information about admission, registration, testing, general requirements and answer other common questions such as:
1. Where is SLCC?Salt Lake Community College serves students at 14 locations throughout the Salt Lake Valley and in Tooele, plus an online Virtual Campus. Click here for a complete listing of locations. 2. Where can I get an application for enrollment?Enrollment applications are available at all SLCC sites and online. To receive an application by mail call (801) 957-4297. 3. How many years are required for residency tuition?A student is eligible for resident tuition after 24 months of continuous residency in Utah or after 60 continuous semester hours at a higher education institution within the state. 4. Who can take classes at SLCC?SLCC is an open admission college, which means that certain grades or test scores are not required for admission. However, placement testing may be required before taking certain courses and programs including math, English, Health Sciences and others. Tests can be taken at the Assessment Center. For the specific requirements of these programs call (801) 957-4297. 5. What can I do with a 2-year degree?SLCC offers a variety of degree options. According to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2003 employees with an Associate’s degree earned, on average, 20 percent more than employees with only a high school diploma.Students in SLCC Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs are highly recruited by business and industry. Job placement for graduates of the most common CTE programs are consistently well over 90 percent. In fact, many are hired before they graduate and then complete their education at company expense. Many students who earn a two-year Associate’s degree at SLCC transfer their credits to four-year colleges or universities. SLCC has established transfer and articulation agreements with Utah System of Higher Education (USHE) institutions and a variety of other private, public, and out-of-state institutions. Can I take classes at SLCC while I attend another school?Yes! Many students prefer taking some of their general education classes here because of the small classes and lower tuition costs. Any SLCC course that is numbered 1000 and above will transfer to other Utah colleges or universities, both public and private. SLCC also has transfer articulation agreements with BYU Hawaii, BYU Idaho, Brooks Institute of Photography and California State University Bakersfield. 7. When’s the next orientation?Orientation programs are a great way to become familiar with SLCC and include information about registration, advising, parking, buying books and much more. SLCC offers three different orientation options, all of which can be viewed here. QuickConnect orientations are held most frequently. 8. Is there an admission deadline?SLCC does not have admission deadlines, but we strongly suggest, for your best interest, that you apply about eight weeks before the start of a semester. That way, you have time to attend orientation, get academic and financial aid advising and sign up for the classes you are interested in taking. 9. When do classes begin?For important academic dates, visit the Academic Calendar. For other important calendar information check out “Campus Events” on SLCC’s homepage. Where can I find out about student activities?MyPage is the College’s portal for announcements and campus events, and is a gateway to all College services – including registration and tuition payment. MyPage also includes a tab called “Student Life.” 12. What is the University Center?The University Center extends your educational choices by offering degrees and programs at SLCC's Redwood Road Campus through cooperating institutions. These are programs that would be otherwise unavailable in this geographic area. Bachelor's Degrees, an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Ornamental Horticulture, and even Master’s programs are available to students who have been granted admission by the sponsoring university. For more information, click here. 13. Where do I buy books?You can purchase books and supplies from any of SLCC’s five bookstore locations. 14. Where do I find the College Catalog?You can buy a College Catalog at any SLCC bookstore or courtesy desk. You can also view it online. 15. Where do I find the class schedule?Each semester the class schedule is available in several different forms. You can buy a hard copy at any SLCC bookstore or view it online. 16. What is continuing education?Continuing Education, headquartered at the Miller Campus, focuses on programs designed to meet the needs of business, industry, agencies, and professionals in their fields. Programs range from on-going, career-oriented programs to customized training focused on development of a particular skill. Continuing Education focuses on on-site delivery of programs and courses. What programs are available at SLCC?SLCC offers more than 100 degree programs, as well as continuing education, apprenticeships and other options to help students achieve their educational objectives. What is MyPage?MyPage is the College’s portal for for announcements and campus events, and is a gateway to all College services – including registration and tuition payment. Check it out for daily updates on campus events and students activities. MyPage also provides online chat groups to all students, faculty and staff. 20. How do I sign up for a MyPage account?You receive a MyPage account when your application for admission is processed.
