How to Apply

Instructions for Transfer Applicants

The transfer application procedure is for students who are transferring from another college or university in the U.S. to SLCC without first returning to their home country. The following documents and credentials are to be submitted to International Student Services for review before Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) will issue an I-20:

1. Application for Admission

Complete the International Student Application for Admission with the appropriate field of study. A $65 non-refundable application fee must accompany the application.

2. Financial Verification

A realistic financial plan is necessary for the issuance of an I-20 form. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS, formerly INS) requires Salt Lake Community College to verify that an international student has the financial ability to pursue an education in the United States. The following documents may be used to demonstrate financial ability:
  • An official bank statement showing at least $19,500 in liquid assets (additional $4,000 required for each dependent) from the student or his/her sponsor (a sponsor is not required if the student has sufficient funds on his/her own).
  • A financial statement (download, print and mail) signed by your sponsor and notarized.

3. Proof of English Proficiency

  • SLCC Computerized Placement Test (CPT)

The CPT, including the LOEP, is required of all students. A minimum score of 84 is required to enter a major. Students scoring between 72 and 83 will be admitted to the level four ESL classes. Student scoring below 72 will be admitted to the Salt Lake Community College Intensive English Language Program at the Skills Center.

The CPT must have been taken within the last year. The test is given at the SLCC Assessment Center on a weekday basis and can be taken anytime after applying to SLCC. The CPT can be taken at the Redwood Road Assessment Center (801) 957-4269 or South City Campus Assessment Center (801) 957-3284. No appointment is necessary. The CPT is an untimed test; a student can take as long as needed to complete it. A photo ID is required to take the test.
  • TOEFL Examination (optional)

A minimum computer-based TOEFL score of 173 is required to enter a major. International students who score between 133 -172 will be admitted to the level four ESL classes. Students scoring below 133 will be admitted to the Salt Lake Community College Intensive English Language Program at the Skills Center. The TOEFL test scores must be official and taken within the last two years. Information on the TOEFL may be obtained at www.toefl.org or by writing to TOEFL, Education Testing Services, P.O. Box 6151, Princeton, New Jersey, 08541-6151, U.S.A. Test results should be sent directly to the International Student Advisor at Salt Lake Community College. The institutional code for SLCC is 4864.

Students who are unable to take either of the tests listed above will be issued an I-20 for Intensive English. The students will be tested upon arrival and then enroll for 20 hours a week in the Intensive English Language Program.

NOTE: Entering students should be aware that gaining proficiency in English may require as much as ONE YEAR and may delay entry into their degree programs. Students should plan their course of study and financial support accordingly.

 4. Transcripts

Students who have attended a U.S. post-secondary school, college or university must submit official transcripts from that school. Students who have attended a non-U.S. post-secondary school, college, or university are not required to submit transcripts, but may submit them for possible credit transfer. Official English translations must be included with all foreign documents. Faxed documents are not accepted. Foreign credit evaluations can be obtained through a company that does foreign credential evaluation such as Educational Perspectives at www.educational-perspectives.org.

5. Transfer Form

Students (who currently have an F-1 visa) transferring from schools within the U.S. must submit a transfer form signed by the International Student Advisor at the current school certifying that the student has been enrolled full-time and has maintained F-1 student status. Overall grade point average (cumulative) for transfer students must be a 2.0 (C average) or better for consideration for admission.
