COURSE NUMBER: MATH 1090

TITLE: College Algebra-Business

3 CREDIT HOURS

This course continues to explore, in greater depth, standard Math 1010 algebra topics with applications for business. Students will apply algebraic skills to the formulation and solution of business applications. Topics include: functions including linear, quadratic, exponential, and logarithmic; systems of equations; matrices and determinants; linear programming; mathematics of finance. Math 1090 satisfies the graduation requirement in mathematics at SLCC.


PREREQUISITES FOR THE COURSE:


Math 1010, with a grade of C or better, or who otherwise qualify by virtue of acceptable CPT or ACT scores achieved within the past year.


GENERAL COURSE INFORMATION:


Topics to be covered include:

Functions and graphs.
Business applications of Linear and Quadratic Equations.
Systems of equations.
Matrices.
Input/Output Analysis - Leontieff models.
Linear Inequalities and Linear Programming.
Exponential and Logarithmic Functions.

ompound interest.
Geometric and arithmetic series.
Loans and annuities.

COURSE OUTCOMES:

At the conclusion of the course, the student will be able to:


Use mathematical properties to graph continuous and piece-wise functions.
Identify intervals on which a given function is increasing or decreasing.
Find total cost, total revenue and total profit for both linear and quadratic models.
Perform Break-even and maximization analysis for both linear and quadratic models.

Compute supply, demand, break-even points for both linear and quadratic models.
Solve systems of linear equations and inequalities.
Use Graphical methods in Linear Programming to find optimization.
Use the Simplex method in maximization problems.

Use properties of logarithms and exponents solve equations.
Use Growth and Decay models.
Compute Simple and Compound Interest.
Apply Arithmetic and Geometric Sequences formulas.
Find the Future and Present Value of regular annuities.
Find loan payments and unpaid balances using amortization formulas.
Advance readily to higher-level math classes including Business Calculus
