Medical Laboratory Technicians perform general tests in all areas of the medical laboratory.

Job tasks

Collect blood specimens by venipuncture. Collect, process and prepare blood samples for transfusion. Evaluate blood clotting processes. Identify antibodies and antigens associated with disease. Perform chemical analyses. Operate state-of-the-art instrumentation. Study blood cells. Study bacteria and other microorganisms.

Aptitudes

MLTs are problem solvers. They like challenge and responsibility. MLTs must be accurate, skilled and self-motivated. They communicate effectively, both in writing and speaking.

Temperament

Must be honest, have integrity, be organized and attentive to detail.

Working Conditions

Laboratories are generally well-lighted and clean. In addition, excellent health and education benefits with flexible work schedules are often available.

Physical Demands

Standing, walking, and sitting all required at various times. Emotionally stressful situations may occur.

Job Outlook

A shortage of qualified MLTs exists and job opportunities are excellent. This shortage is not expected to be alleviated in the near future.
