Recording Arts / Music Technology at SLCC

One of the fastest growing areas of SLCC's music program is the area of music technology. With the new expansion and update of the music computer lab, students can now take courses that give them hands-on experience developing music projects using some of the most cutting-edge technology in the industry.

Courses currently offered in Media Music/Music Technology include Songwriting I (Music 1050), Introduction to MIDI/Electronic Music Composition (Music 1520) and Basic Audio Production (Music 2900 Section 1). Songwriting I covers the basics of writing the popular song, from effective lyric writing to melody, chords and basic arranging. The Introduction to MIDI/Electronic Music Composition course provides instruction in the development of a music project using MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) technologies and sampling and synthesis techniques, while the Basic Audio Production course is an introductory-level audio recording course taught in conjunction with the Film and Theater Department that goes over the basics of audio recording applicable to a variety of situations, whether it be recording a musician's performance in a studio, a live on-stage performance or dialog on the shooting set of a motion picture production.

New sections of Introduction to MIDI/Electronic Music Composition and Songwriting I have just opened for fall semester.  The evening section of Songwriting I especially tends to fill up, so sign up now to take advantage of this opportunity.  See also our new poster highlighting music technology/recording arts offerings for Fall 2008.

Additional music technology/media music classes are currently in development and are anticipated to be added to SLCC's curriculum in the near future.
