Open SLCC Grants

Open SLCC is committed to supporting faculty and practitioners in their efforts to adopt, adapt, develop, and maintain OER at SLCC. The Open SLCC team, in collaboration with the Open SLCC Advisory Committee, and stakeholders has created a new avenue to provide additional project support, transparency and structure for OER works at SLCC.

Grant Categories

Who is eligible to apply?

  • Full-time faculty with AD & Dean support
  • Adjunct with pre-approved supervisor support
  • Staff with supervisor support

Grant Development, Launch & Review Timelines

  • Applications open March 28, 2024
  • Application period closes April 26, 2024
  • Grant awardees are expected to be announced May 1, 2024

Anyone interested in applying for grant funding for the 2024-2025 academic year is encouraged to apply during the spring grant cycle. Based on program capacity and funding availability, another call for proposals may be offered in Fall 2024, but not guaranteed.

Things to Have in Place Before You Apply

  • Gap Analysis: You have established a compelling need for this OER project.
  • OER Basics: You know or have had experience with OER basics, including giving proper attribution and understanding Creative Commons licensing.
  • Departmental Support Letter: You have a departmental support letter.
  • Estimated Project Timelines: You have planned and thought through dates for the development phase, editing, reviewing, piloting, publication, wrap-up, and rollout to students.
  • Requested Project Budget: Create a detailed budget that includes estimated hours per payment for each project role. Support role funding such as eLearning or the Open SLCC editor, does not need to be included in the budget although the listed estimated hours are helpful.

Available Training (Not required before applying, but helpful)

The following training is useful to create your OER project.

  • Intro to OER: OER 101. if you are new to OER, need help conducting a gap analysis or understanding Creative Commons licensing. Register through my.slcc.edu training. Code: FA91.
  • Accessibility Training, if you are new to formatting your OER to be accessible to users with disabilities. Check with the Universal Access Coordinator, james.farquharson@slcc.edu on current workshops/training.

Possible Support People to Consult

Consulting with the following support people may help you prepare your application.

  • Your AD/Dean/Supervisor and department. This application must contain an approval letter from the AD/Dean/Supervisor.
  • A librarian. Depending on your project’s type and scope, your librarian liaison will help you conduct a Gap Analysis about suitable existing OER and to establish a compelling need to create a new OER.
  • An instructional technologist—eLearning if your project will impact a Canvas course and will be tied to a quality review, or your project will need Pressbook support and integration.
  • Open SLCC’s Editor, Linda Bult for a developmental editing consultation.
  • Open SLCC Director, Andrea Scott, for application related or OER requirement questions or if you are unsure about where to host your project. Projects must be developed on SharePoint, Team Site, or an institutionally supported platform to support collaboration and access.

Final Grant Project Requirements

By agreeing to an Open SLCC grant, you will also agree to submit the following when you are finished with your OER project:

  • Provide a resources page, listing the resources you used to curate or build the project.
  • Provide an open link to your fully developed OER content so that anyone can access, catalog, and use the material. Do not require a login. Depending on the project, SLCC encourages Canvas Commons and Pressbooks as the final publishing site.
  • Format your project content using Universal Design and Accessibility formatting so that those with disabilities can access your OER content with a screen reader.
  • Label under a Creative Commons license and provide proper open-resource attribution ensuring your project adheres to open licensing requirements.

No. You only need one application per project. Determine beforehand who the lead on the project will be and they will fill out the application.

Yes! Intro to OER is an asynchronous Canvas course which will help you familiarize yourself with Open Education Resources basics, including where to begin searching for OER, attributions for material you use and the purpose and use for Creative Commons licenses.

No! We understand even after reviewing the documents and information that we have provided on this page that additional questions may arise or that you need additional time to put your application together. You may continue to go back in and work on your application up through April 26th at 11:55 pm. Just save your work as a Draft until you are ready to submit.

During the Open SLCC Program review, external reviewers recommended that Open SLCC implement a centralized OER funding and management structure to improve equitable funding distribution and better manage workflow efficiency to ensure program sustainability.
