1. How recently-patented or patent-pending construction methods and techniques improve the construction industry;
2. The potential for legal liability a Contractor may face when using another's proprietary and protected designs, innovations and techniques, even if unaware such a technique was the protected intellectual property of another; and
3. How a Contractor may protect his/her own innovative ideas, designs and construction-related techniques.
   
   Team taught by experienced intellectual property attorney's Alissa and Brandon Owen.

This course qualifies for 3 Continuing Education credits.

Course #2  Utah Codes: An Update and Review
This workshop will provide an update on the new Utah State codes and mandates as they become policy in the Code Book.  An additional review of major sections of the code book will also be conducted for Contractors. 

This course qualifies for 3 Continuing Education credits.

Our Instructors
Alissa Owen is an intellectual property attorney at Kirton & McConkie which is one of Utah's largest firms.  Ms. Owen has an Honors BS degree in Civil Engineering.  She is also General Counsel for a national non-profit organization and was recently hired as an Administrative Law Judge for Park City Corporation where she will adjudicate disputes involving building code violations.

Brandon Owen is an intellectual property attorney at Holland and Hart. He was a law clerk at the Federal Circuit, the court with exclusive jurisdiction over patent matters.  He has an MBA.

Patrick Tomasino has been the Chief Building Official for the City of Taylorsville since 2002.  He is a Certified Plan Reviewer and holds certificates from ICC in the following areas:  Building Code, Electrical Code, Mechanical Code, Plumbing Code, in both the International Codes and the Uniform Codes.  He served as the Salt Lake regional coordinator for the Utah Chapter of ICC inspectors for three years, in 1995, 1999, and 2005.
