Radiologic Technology Career Information Radiologic Technologist / also know as a Radiographer Radiographers specialize in using x-rays to produce images of the tissues, organs, bones and vessels of the body, as prescribed by physicians, to assist in the diagnosis of disease or injury. Radiographers perform a wide variety of diagnostic x-ray procedures, including examinations of the skeletal system, the chest and abdomen. They also assist the radiologist, who is a specialized physician, during more complex radiographic procedures. Job Tasks A radiographer performs radiographic procedures, applies principles of radiation protection, evaluates radiographs for technical quality, exercises professional judgment, and provides direct patient care. Career and Salary Options: Typical Entry-Level Salary Radiographer $33,000 - $35,000 Working Conditions Possibilities include working in hospitals, clinics, private offices, industry and public health facilities. Day, afternoon, evening and weekend shifts available. Full-time and part-time. Highly technological, computerized equipment. Physical Demands Lifting and moving imaging equipment required. May have to stand for lengthy periods of time. May be exposed to trauma situations and infectious diseases. Very busy departments. Job Outlook There is currently a nation-wide shortage of radiologic technologists. All current literature projects that shortage will continue and worsen through the year 2010.
