Safety Inspection and Applied Emissions

State and Federal regulations require that all motor vehicle and commercial trailers registered in Utah and operating in interstate commerce are to be inspected annually for safety and that all vehicles with gasoline or diesel engines be inspected at the proper interval for compliance with vehicle emissions standards.

Safety Inspection                                        Safety and Emissions Class Schedule

The Utah Highway Patrol (UHP) is the state agency that administers and enforces the vehicle safety inspection program. UHP requires that inspectors for vehicle safety:

  • Take 16 hours of approved training
  • Pay a non-refundable $10.00 application processing fee to UHP.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Have a valid Utah driver's license, or an out of state license approved by the UHP
Emissions

The Salt Lake Valley Health Department requires that anyone wanting to be a certified I/M inspector complete a training class conducted by the health department.  Before taking that class a candidate must first prove their knowledge of vehicle emissions systems by either:

  • passing a pre-test administered by the health department with a score determined by that department

or

  • successfully completing an Applied Emissions class conducted by Salt Lake Community College designed to prepare the student for the county class.  Successful completion means attending all class sessions and completing the final test with a score of 80 percent or better.

All scheduled classes are held at the Larry H. Miller campus, 9750 South 300 West, Sandy UT
