Assistant Editor (The Globe)

The Globe is currently hiring multiple Assistant Editors to start during the Spring 2017 semester. Produce a weekly publication that is seen by thousands of people at Salt Lake Community College!

About The Globe

As the student newspaper of Salt Lake Community College, The Globe serves as a stepping stone for SLCC students looking to enter the workforce as journalists, photographers or editors. Every edition is created, written and published by students.

The Globe is printed once weekly in tabloid format and published online at www.globeslcc.com.

Responsibilities

  • Function as the primary content and quality editor for all assigned articles
  • Edit articles submitted to online newsroom and meet all editing deadlines
  • Edit captions for photos uploaded to online newsroom, when needed
  • Write headlines for articles, when needed
  • Write articles to fill the paper, if necessary
  • Attend and participate in weekly newspaper staff meetings
  • Provide feedback on story submissions to help staff writers and journalism students
  • Encourage discussion of Globe stories and other initiatives on social media sites
  • Maintain a positive, professional working relationship with Globe staff and advisors
  • Assist the Editor in Chief as needed

Requirements

  • Write at an above-average level
  • Be proficient at news writing and editing
  • Possess excellent communication skills
  • Follow the newsroom workflow to meet all deadlines
  • Completed first-level journalism courses, including COMM 1610, COMM 1130 or equivalent courses
  • Be concurrently enrolled in COMM 1620 or completed equivalent coursework
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better

Bonus Skills/Qualities

  • Own an AP Stylebook
  • Previous editing experience
  • Experience in newspaper operations
  • Able to handle multiple assignments efficiently
  • Able to produce high-quality work on a tight deadline
  • Able to work well in a team environment
  • Ready to embrace a leadership role
  • Relatable to college students
  • Active on Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites
  • Know how to use Microsoft Word and Word Online

Hours & Pay, etc.

An Assistant Editor is a part-time contract position; pay is dependent on the amount and quality of work completed each week of a semester. All Globe staff members must keep a work log and turn it in to SMC Program Manager each semester in order to verify pay.
