New Public Safety CenterThe Larry and Gail Miller Public Safety Education & Training Center was dedicated to the Salt Lake Community College November 30. This new three-story, 73,000 square-foot building is located on 9750 South 300 West at the Larry H. Miller Campus of SLCC. Mr. Miller noted that this opening is the result of the strong emotional connection he has developed over time with the Community College. “This project became more than just a building to me,” Miller said, “when I got to see the excitement of those involved, to see the happiness people will get out of it, it became much more rewarding to me personally that my family and I could be a part of it. That part of it really caught me by surprise.” The opening of the Miller family’s eponymous facility ensures that SLCC will continue to be involved not only in strengthening the minds and enhancing the career prospects of its 60,000 students, but also in providing safer, more livable communities in the Salt Lake Valley and throughout the State of Utah. This exciting new $21 million building signals a significant innovation in the public safety field, and will serve as a model for other States and Colleges across the country. This development adds to the diversity of Salt Lake Community College’s student population and also ensures that different branches of government will have the capacities to effectively share information, training methods, and better learn from each other than ever before. "This is the foundation and opening of a legacy," according to Department of Corrections Executive Director Scott Carver who hopes that the outcome will result in communities taking pride in the law enforcement officers that serve them. Carver recognizes that this Public Safety Center will allow the State of Utah “to train people to the highest standard possible.” The Larry and Gail Miller Public Safety Education & Training Center is one of the first of its kind, in that it will house training for separate safety units from across the State. The Department of Public Safety, the Police Department, the Highway Patrol, and the Department of Corrections will all now train under the aegis of SLCC. The training centers for these respective departments are the Utah POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training) Academy, the DPS Development Education Center, the Utah Highway Patrol training, and the Department of Corrections Training Academy. Larry H. Miller’s donation of the new Public Safety and Training Center enhances the commitment to public safety training, business training, and education that the Miller family shares with Salt Lake Community College. The training center expands the wide array of programs and classes currently offered at the Miller campus, and will include an indoor firearms range, fitness center, mock dispatch center, simulated jail cell, dormitory, filming studio, and classrooms. |
