SLCC Assessment Initiative

Beginning with Summer Semester 2008, all new matriculated (degree seeking) Salt Lake Community College students will be required to complete an Assessment initiative as part of their registration process.

The Assessment Initiative requires that students take either the ACT, SAT or Accuplacer test and provide the scores to the institution before they may register for classes.

The Assessment initiative is a Student Success initiative.  Test scores serve only to advise and place students properly in college level coursework for their individual student success.

FAQ

What is the Assessment Initiative?
Think of it as a Student Success initiative.  We want to help you achieve your goals.  The more information that we have about you and your skill levels, the better we can assist you in registering for classes appropriate for your skill level.

How does a student fulfill the Assessment Initiative requirement?
Very easily.  The initiative simply states that you need to furnish us with test scores from either the ACT, SAT or Accuplacer.  Until you do this, you will not be able to register for classes.

So, does this mean I can be refused admission because of my test scores?
Absolutely not!  The Assessment Initiative is NOT an admissions screening device.  It is simply a tool to allow us to be more pro-active in helping you achieve success.  SLCC will remain an open entry institution.  Test scores are used ONLY for helping you place into a class appropriate for your skill level.

Where can I take these tests?
You may take the Accuplacer test at our Redwood, Jordan or South City Campuses in the Assessment Center.  Testing is available daily.

How long does it take to receive results?
You will receive your Accuplacer results as soon as you’re done with the test.  ACT and SAT results take about 6 weeks from the testing date.

Which SLCC students are required to complete the Assessment Initiative?

*New matriculating students:  If you are planning on completing a degree, you must furnish the College with test scores.
*Incoming transfer students:  Students who have earned credits at another college or university may be able to use their English and/or Math credits to waive all or part of the assessment initiative testing requirement.
*Matriculated, returning SLCC students:  Students who have been away from SLCC for two or more years and are re-applying for admission must meet the requirement.  Returning students may submit ACT, SAT or Accuplacer scores less than two years old to meet the requirement.

What SLCC students are NOT required to complete the Assessment Initiative as part of the registration process?

*Skills Center students:  Skills Center students start classes with an alternative assessment and are not required to submit ACT, SAT or Accuplacer scores.
*Non-matriculated students:  Students who are not pursuing a degree, diploma or certificate of completion.
