ALTERNATIVE SPRING BREAK

Go places, give service! If you want to take a trip of a lifetime, sign up for Alternative Spring Break!

Alternative Spring Break at SLCC challenges students to learn about social issues, such as poverty and homelessness, and empowers them to personally make a difference through volunteering.

ASB 2007

• The Thayne Center for Service & Learning coordinated two Alternative Spring Break trips in March 2007 for SLCC students.

• A total of 32 people participated in these trips, ranging from ages 17 to 52. Collectively, they gave 960 hours of service.

• SLCC students paid only $250 to participate in the ASB trip to San Francisco and $450 to go to New Orleans. The cost covered air fare, housing, and food for a week. A $10,000 donation allowed the Thayne Center to subsidize the cost of student trips.

• One group traveled to New Orleans to work with Habitat for Humanity (www.habitat.org). They helped build homes in Musician’s Village, an area damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Participants lived in Camp Hope, an elementary school converted into a volunteer camp. The SLCC group was among 646 people that stayed in Camp Hope that week.

• Another group went to San Francisco to help the Glide Foundation (www.glide.org). This non-profit organization assists people who suffer from poverty, drug abuse, violence, and despair. The SLCC group stayed in a hostel, and supported the Glide Foundation by serving meals to poor and homeless people, and working with clients.

About ASB

Alternative Spring Break is a national program where many colleges and universities organize drug and alcohol-free trips for students that want to travel to other destinations, often out-of-state, and volunteer during their fall or spring breaks.

Since 1999, the Thayne Center has organized 17 ASB trips. Participants have traveled to 12 states, including New York, Hawaii, and Colorado.
