WHAT America Reads is a national campaign that helps children become stronger readers. America Reads focuses on children in grades K-3, and helps them read well and independently by the end of third grade.
WHY Nearly 15 years ago, 40 percent of American 4th graders were reading below grade level. Today, many children are still not reading well. Studies show that children who read and write well at an early age are more likely to succeed in school and life.
HOW At Salt Lake Community College, students with Federal Work-Study may apply for jobs as literacy tutors with America Reads. Tutors work with children in classrooms, tutoring centers, and after-school programs to help children improve their literacy skills (reading, writing, thinking, speaking and learning). In addition, tutors are role models and mentors who motivate children to learn and succeed.
WHO Tutors work with children who need additional attention and academic support. Many children come from disadvantaged financial and social backgrounds, and are learning the English language.
TUTORS make a difference in the lives of children!
