Utah Service Symposium | Thayne Center for Service & Learning

“Artivism is using art as a means of activism.
In other words, incorporating messages of change,
empowerment, and calls to action in any work of art.”

—Stephanie Gentry-Fernández

Artivism is the theme of this year's Utah Service Symposium. On March 23, 2006, dozens of college students from across Utah gathered at the Symposium, an annual celebration of art and service, at Salt Lake Community College. Festivities included keynote speaker Stephanie Gentry-Fernández—a spoken-word artist and activist for non-violence, a gallery stroll of visual and documentary arts pieces, an awards presentation of Symposium winners, and an open-mic forum for students who shared their stories and Symposium entries about giving service to the community.
