WHEN YOU'RE ALMOST READY TO GRADUATE

  • Apply for SLCC Graduation

AS SOON AS YOU THINK THERE IS A POSSIBILITY YOU MIGHT TRANSFER

  • MEET WITH AN SLCC ADVISOR as a walk-in student or by making an appointment.  Learn the requirements for General Education and pre-major transfer courses.  Colleges and universities prefer you to have already chosen a major when you transfer.  An advisor can assist with identifying pre-majors courses that can be completed within SLCC’s transfer degrees.
  • UNDECIDED STUDENTS can participate in a free Career Clues workshop, take a personality and/or interest assessment, or attend the Career and Major Fair held twice each year in the Student Center.  See the “Undecided on a Major?” section for more ideas.
  • RESEARCH COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES.  Which schools offer your major?  If there is more than one school you are considering, compare the courses required for each program.  It’s likely that the upper-division courses will be quite different based on faculty expertise at each school.  Check out the academic requirements, location, costs, financial aid options, sports, housing, activities, etc.  See the “College Comparison Worksheet” for questions to ask.
  • PARTICIPATE IN TRANSFER ACTIVITIES.  Investigate academic programs at many schools by attending transfer workshops, visiting information tables, and attending open house programs for transfer students.  Check the on-line Calendar of Transfer Events often for updates.
  • MEET WITH AN ADVISOR at each school to which you might transfer.  Call ahead; some schools prefer that you make an advising appointment.  Take a copy of your transcript(s) so he/she can review the courses you have taken or are currently taking. If your transcript does not yet show SLCC graduation with an AS or AA, explain your plans.  There may also be an advisor in your major department who can assist you in selecting courses.

6-9 MONTHS BEFORE YOU PLAN TO BEGIN CLASSES ELSEWHERE

  • APPLY FOR ADMISSION at each college/university you are considering. This does not commit you to attending any specific school.  Although you’ll have to pay application fees with each application, you may get a clearer picture of the cost to attend, financial aid and scholarships available, required courses and length of time until graduation, etc. if college personnel can see the facts in writing.  Apply as early as possible.  The deadline dates listed here are the LAST dates on which you may apply, and registration for the next semester may already be in process.
  • REQUEST THAT AN OFFICIAL SLCC TRANSCRIPT BE SENT ($4 each) to each of the school(s) to which you apply.  Many colleges and universities will not accept a hand carried copy even in a sealed envelope.  There are several ways to request transcripts from SLCC Enrollment Services: in person, by mail, and by fax.  You can view information about each method at the Enrollment Services web site.  Also request official copies of transcripts from all other schools attended, even if you have earned a degree at SLCC.  (You’ll need to request an official transcript once again after you’ve graduated, but then you will send it only to the one school you’ll be attending.)
  • RESTRICTED MAJORS!  Some majors are restricted, that is, they have more students that want to get into their program than they can accept.  Many of these programs may begin only once a year, and may have selective GPAs, specific courses that must be completed, and application deadlines.  Plan ahead and read the fine print!  Even in non-restricted majors, you may need to apply separately for upper-division status.
  • APPLY FOR FINANCIAL AID AND SCHOLARSHIPS from schools to which you’ve applied and from independent sources.  Many of these deadlines are early!  Usually scholarships from a specific school require admission to that school first.
  • MAKE A DECISION. Once you’ve decided where to transfer, you’ll need to pay any deposit that may be required and read all information from the school very carefully.  You are responsible for knowing when and where and how, so…
  • ATTEND ORIENTATION for new transfer students and be informed.  The systems at each school are different for registration, dropping, adding, withdrawing, graduation deadlines, financial aid and more.  Find out about campus activities and associations to enhance your major, and to enhance your fun!

WHEN YOU’RE ALMOST READY TO GRADUATE. . .

  • APPLY FOR SLCC GRADUATION Posting of graduation is not automatic.  Yes, you have to apply to have your degree posted to your SLCC transcript.  It is helpful to apply by the posted dates on the Graduation Application Form, it helps the graduation office make sure you will have completed all requirements.  The Graduation Office will accept late applications.  Students graduate from SLCC every semester but the graduation ceremony is once a year in May.  Diplomas are mailed to students 6-8 weeks after final grades are posted.
