Frequently Asked Questions About University Center Programs

What is the University Center?
The Center's main purpose is to collaborate with universities to offer Bachelor's degrees at Salt Lake Community College. This provides many students the opportunity to continue their education without having to travel or relocate. Classes are generally offered at the Redwood campus located at 4600 South Redwood Road.

What degrees do you offer?

Weber State University offers the following Bachelor of Science degrees: Criminal Justice, Computer Science and Construction Management Technology.

University of Utah, College of Nursing offers an online RN-BS program for individuals who have completed an Associate of Science degree and have their RN license.

An Internet based Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Resource Management from California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB) is available to students who have completed either an Associate of Science in Environmental Technology or all required lower division prerequisites.

Utah State University extension services offers both an Associate of Applied Science and Bachelor of Science in Ornamental Horticulture, a BS in Business,  a certificate in Human Resource Management and a Master's in Computer Science

Utah Valley University offers a BS in Biotechnology

Franklin University offers online Bachelor of Science degrees in the following:

It is important to note that students pay their tuition and fees to the particular institution they will be attending.

When are courses taught?
Most courses are taught during evening hours from 5:30 - 10:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, while some courses may vary occasionally. Please contact the Center at (801) 957-4735 for a schedule.

Will I be able to complete the entire degree at SLCC?
Generally speaking,  students should be able to complete their entire degree here, at SLCC with the exception of the Criminal Justice emphasis in Forensic Science/Laboratory . Students intending to complete this degree should contact Dr. Brent Horn at  www.brenthorn@weber.edu or at 801-626-8843 .

How can I find out if I meet the prerequisites for a program?
Students can determine if they meet program prerequisites in any of the following ways:

    1.    Meet with either the University Center advisor or the departmental advisor for each program.
    2.    Contact you university departmental advisor. Please refer to the specific Weber program for this information.
    3.    Stop by the office to obtain information describing the program or review it on our web page.

What if I have been out of school for a while?
If you are not sure that you have completed all the required courses, contact the University Center's advisor to review your records. You may also want to follow up that meeting by contacting the appropriate department and school you are interested in, or begin by contacting the department.

How do I enroll in these programs and Get Started?
Generally, once students have completed, or are nearing completion of their Associate of Science Degree they may apply for admission into a program the semester before they intend to begin course work. Applications to all programs are available online. Accessing the application can be accomplished by referring to the specific program in which you intend to enroll listed on our home page. Once admitted and enrolled students will receive information by email regarding registration, course and semester schedules.

    Exceptions to this include RN-BS program and Ornamental Horticulture.
    *Students planning to apply to the RN-BS with the University of Utah must observe the application deadlines for both the College of Nursing and the U of U, which is approximately February 15 of each year. For applications contact http://nursing.utah.edu/programs/bs/rn_bs/requirements.html 

    *Ornamental Horticulture students can start any semester and take classes from both SLCC and Utah State University without applying for admission first. However, they are encouraged to apply for admission as soon as possible for the purpose of accurate record keeping and advising.

Registration is coordinated through each institution. Students may register either by telephone, email or regular mail. Interested individuals are encouraged to contact the University Center staff for questions at any time regarding registration, schedules, and application.

What if I need financial aid?
Students who want to apply for financial aid should contact the financial aid office of the school from which they intend to graduate as early as possible. It will be important to follow the guidelines of a specific school although you will be attending classes at SLCC. Please contact the following for further information:

   Utah State University: Individuals should contact the general financial aid office at (435) 797-0173 Tuesdays -      Fridays from 8:00 a.. to 5:00 pm.

   Students who may need to concurrently enroll in both upper division and SLCC courses and request financial       aid will need to obtain a consortium agreement between both schools. Please contact Michael Brown at (801)      957-4706 in Salt Lake Community College's financial aid office.

What if I need to enroll in courses with two institutions such as SLCC and WSU? What services can I expect while attending courses at SLCC?
University Center students are allowed all of the same privileges as community college students once they obtain their student identification card! This includes all library services, access to the Lifetime Activity Center, advising, tutoring, computer labs, use of the testing center and all student activities. A major goal of the University Center is to make your stay a full educational experience which includes ensuring that these services are provided.

Where can I purchase books and supplies?
Weber State University students will be able to purchase books and supplies at the SLCC Redwood campus bookstore. Utah State University students will purchase their books through Express a book; CSUB students will purchase their books through mail order from and receive them via UPS.
