Biotechnology Certificate of Proficiency (CP)

  • Required Credits: 16
  • Short-term program focused on specific skills leading to employment or continued study.
  • Competency-based education (CBE) format
  • Biotechnology courses do not require textbooks.

  • Students will gain practical lab skills and an understanding of the role of regulations and quality in industry, and practice effective communication in both research and manufacturing-oriented environments. The certificate stacks fully into the Biotechnology AS.

  • The time to completion is 2-3 semesters based on a full-time minimum of 15 credits per semester. Less than 15 credits per semester will increase time to completion and cost for the program.

Biotechnology Associate of Science (AS)

  • Required Credits: 61
  • A two-year transfer degree with general education and premajor coursework. The SLCC Biotechnology AS Program prepares students for employment in Utah’s growing biotech industry, while also preparing them for transfer to higher education.

  • Includes all courses required for the Certificate of Proficiency (CP). All remaining general education classes required for the AS degree are taught at a variety of campuses and times.

  • The time to completion is 4-5 semesters based on a full-time minimum of 15 credits per semester (Includes CP). Less than 15 credits per semester will increase time to completion and cost for the program.

How much will the program cost?

Cost is based on the number of semesters that it takes a particular student to complete the program.

* Cost range is for entire length of program, dependent on courses taken. No BTEC courses require purchase of books.

Transfer/Articulation Information

Utah Valley University (UVU) accepts the SLCC Biotech AS as transfer credit. UVU also brings their faculty to the Jordan campus to teach evening sections of the required UVU BS courses. This means that program graduates may be able to earn a UVU bachelor’s degree with their employer’s support, without having to commute to Orem.


Degree Definitions:

  • AA - Associate of Arts: Two-year transfer degree with general education and premajor coursework
  • AS - Associate of Science: Two-year transfer degree with general education and premajor coursework
  • APE - Associate of Pre-Engineering: Two-year transfer degree with general education and premajor coursework
  • AAS - Associate of Applied Science: Two-year degree leading to employment or continued study
  • CC - Certificate of Completion: One-year program leading to employment or continued study
  • CP - Certificate of Proficiency: Short-term (approximately one semester) program focused on specific skills
