Geographic Information Sciences Technology

In today's world and economy, how can you make yourself standout from the rest of the competition? Experience in geospatial technology such as GIS just may take you to the next level. Recently the U.S. Department of Labor stated that careers in the geospatial technology is one of the fastest in the nation. Any field that requires "spatial thinking" uses geospatial technology. Geospatial technology such as GIS is used in business and marketing, criminology, education, urban planning and transportation, government, science, social sciences, disaster mitigation and emergency response, and much more!

GIST AAS Degree
The
Geographic Information Science Technology (GIST) AAS degree addresses the technological areas of geography and other sciences that require geospatial technology.

GIS Certificate of Completion
SLCC now offers a 30 credit hour GIS Certificate of Completion as a way for students to enhance their existing degrees to be more competitive in the workforce. The core of the certificate has students complete four GIS-focused courses along with a GIS-based independent projects course. Students with existing degrees or seeking an AS or AAS from SLCC will only need to focus on the five GIS courses for the certificate.

PROGRAM UPDATES

  • The Geoscience Department was awarded a $1.2 million Department of Labor grant to retrain people in high-tech, high-paying jobs! The National Information Security, Geospatial Technologies Consortium (NISGTC) is a three-year, $20 million federal grant that was established in 2011.
  • Because of the DoL grant, the department is partnering with the Computer Information Science (CIS) Department to create mobile apps that focus on spatial location. Courses coming Fall Semester 2013.
  • The GIS program is now aligning with the Department of Labor's Geospatial Technology Competency Model (GTCM) created in 2010 by the Department of Labor and the GeoTech Center for Excellence.
  • GEOG 1780: Remote Sensing of Earth is a General Education course that fullfuls the Physicla Science requirement. Starting Spring Semester 2013, the course will be available face-to-face and online.
