Students with an aptitude in creative problem solving, drawing, design, photography and/or computer related visual communication should consider the rapidly expanding and competitive creative field of art and design.  The Visual Art & Design Department allows students to choose an Emphasis in order to specialize in one of the following areas: Animation, Graphic Design, Illustration, Multimedia, Photography, Web Design, and Graphic Communications Technologies. There are also various Certificate programs, as well as continuing education classes open to all levels of ability. There are no departmental entrance requirements other than curiosity and an interest in exploring your creative voice/vision.

AREAS OF EMPHASIS
Begin your future career by reading the descriptions below and considering which Emphasis within the Visual Art & Design Department appeals to you most. It is not possible to just major in Visual Art & Design—you must choose an emphasis to specialize in. Each Emphasis gives you a specific skill set. ANIMATION EMPHASIS (Transfer Degree)
Associate of Science (AS)

64 credits minimum
Students who elect to pursue an AS Degree in Animation will prepare themselves to successfully transfer to an institution offering a four year Animation Degree. Students will work to develop foundation drawing and design skills, apply animation principles in time based visualizations, and illustrate a working knowledge of quality visual storytelling.

Career Opportunities
Animation artists find varied careers in the creation of digital 2D and 3D art and animation in the video game, film, broadcast, visual effects, mobile, and Internet industries.

Painter

ANIMATION EMPHASIS
Associate Of Applied Science (AAS)

64 credits minimum
Students who elect to pursue an AAS Degree in Animation will work to develop foundation drawing and design skills, apply animation principles in time based visualizations, and illustrate a working knowledge of quality visual storytelling.

GRAPHIC DESIGN EMPHASIS
CTE Associate of Applied Science (AAS)

69 credits minimum
Graphic designers are responsible for the creative concept, design, layout and execution of printed and digital materials such as ads, brochures, logos, annual reports, catalogs, signs, packaging, and posters. Students electing to pursue Graphic Design will prepare themselves for entry-level work in various applications of visual art, graphic design, and advertising. Students will learn visual art business practices and they will prepare a professional portfolio. Graphic creativity and proficiency in current computer programs necessary for employment in the graphic design field are integral parts in this program.

Career Opportunities
Students who elect to specialize in Graphic Design receive job-entry skills and training in various applications of visual art, graphic design and advertising. Students may find jobs in a variety of industries such as: Graphic Design, Package Design, Advertising & Marketing, TV & Film, Book & Magazine Publishing, Printing, Web Design, Animation, Textile Design, Tradeshow & Exhibit Design, Game Design, Research and Public Relations. Positions may include: Creative Director, Associate Creative Director, Senior Art Director, Art Director, Jr. Art Director, Sr. Graphic Designer, Jr. Graphic Designer, Senior Production Artist, Entry-level Production Artist, Production Manager, Production Associate, Production Assistant, Design Manager, Graphic Design Engineer, Web Designer, Composition Technician, Desktop Publishing Technician, Prepress Department Technician, Paper Representative, Printing Representative, etc.

ILLUSTRATION EMPHASIS
CTE Associate of Applied Science (AAS)

68 credits minimum
Students who elect to pursue an AAS Degree in Illustration will prepare themselves for entry-level work in traditional and computer illustration. Students who are preparing for this area of specialization should acquire a high level of drawing skill and the ability to think about the symbolic qualities of form in order to communicate ideas visually.

Career Opportunities
Students can develop a diverse portfolio of original imagery created in various traditional and digital media so students can compete for assignments and staff positions in editorial illustration (including book illustration), advertising illustration, web illustration, and the digital game development industry. Students will learn art business practices and prepare a professional portfolio. Students should understand that it usually takes 3-5 years after graduation to hone a personal, recognizable illustration style and establish a viable illustration client base.

MULTIMEDIA EMPHASIS
CTE Associate of Applied Science (AAS)
65 credits minimum
Students who elect to pursue an AAS Degree in Multimedia will prepare themselves for entry-level work using industry applications for authoring multimedia content for diverse delivery mediums, including Internet, mobile devices, HDTV content and turn key applications. In addition, students will become adept at using computers to edit sound and video, create 3D graphics, animation and digital artwork, as well as designing/producing printed collateral and developing websites. These technical skills are complimented by courses that will provide the opportunity to acquire solid art and design abilities. Those with a propensity for learning technical concepts and a creative and artistic aptitude will enjoy the exciting field of multimedia.

Career Opportunities
Multimedia artists create digital 2D and 3D art and animation and use authoring tools to build digital applications for use on the World Wide Web and in corporate, educational or entertainment titles.

PHOTOGRAPHY EMPHASIS
CTE Associate of Applied Science (AAS)

63 - 64 credits minimum
Photography is widely used in visual art and design, including fine art. Students who elect to pursue the Photography Emphasis will become acquainted with, and gain competencies in, all aspects of the photographic arts. Competencies will include: film & digital camera operation, studio & existing lighting control, working in both digital & film environments to produce color & black and white imagery, along with business practices & photo history. Students also prepare a professional exit portfolio, a required component of the Photography Emphasis; designed to obtain an entry-level job within one of the many photography related career paths, work as freelance photographer, or continue their education for an advanced art degree. Students must have access to fully adjustable camera equipment (digital SLR recommended) and additional equipment and supplies as required for this program and its various courses.

Career Opportunities
Photographers provide traditionally (film) and digitally produced images appropriate for use in advertising and design applications including; web, stock, commercial, and editorial photography. Professional photography positions such as freelance photographer, portrait photographer, fine art photographer, commercial photographer, photographic assistant, digital lab tech / lab aide, photographic representative and sales person may be attainable by the student.

WEB DESIGN EMPHASIS
CTE Associate Of Applied Science (AAS)

68 credits minimum
Students who elect to pursue an AAS degree in Web Design will prepare themselves for entry-level work in the design, creation, and maintenance of websites. Web Design students will obtain both creative and technical skill sets in Web Design, XHTML, CSS and JavaScript alongside structural knowledge of web marketing, web animation, e-Commerce, the social and mobile web.

Career Opportunities
Web Design artists find varied careers in the design, creation, and maintenance of websites in the promotion, film, broadcast, visual effects, mobile, and Internet industries.

 


CERTIFICATE PROGRAMS

GRAPHIC COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES CC
CTE Certificate of Completion

34-36 credits minimum
Students who elect to pursue a Certificate of Completion in Graphic Communications Technologies will prepare themselves for entry level work in the graphic communications industry (printing). In this certificate program students use standard software programs, basic printing techniques, and technical procedures to prepare materials for both traditional publishing (printing) and new digital publishing technologies (tables and digital devices).

Career Opportunities
Upon completion students may find entry-level design and layout positions in the Graphic Communications industry including, but not limited to: printing, publishing, and web design related careers. Students may elect to work in customer service, sales, production coordination, estimating, or prepress.


MOBLE PUBLISHING
CTE Certificate of Completion
32 credits minimum
Students with an interest in developing web and publishing skills specifically related new trends in mobile publishing through creative and visual methods should consider this specialized Certificate of Completion through the Visual Art & Design Department.

Students who elect to pursue this certificate will learn a variety of cutting edge technologies specifically related to electronic and mobile publishing, social media, and new trends as they are developed. Students will stay up-to-date on current trends in industry leading software as well as popular technologies associated with social media, mobile apps, and mobile devices through the required courses outlined below.

Career Opportunities: Upon completion of this certificate, students may find entry level positions in the Graphic Arts Industry including but not limited to graphic communications and web design related careers.
