Transition to Teaching

Transition to Teaching—APPEL

Program Overview

SLCC's Transition to Teaching program supports aspiring educators in Utah working toward their Professional Educator License (PEL) through the Alternative Pathway to Professional Educator Licensing (APPEL). Our courses, approved by the Utah State Board of Education (USBE), provide a practical path to licensure with a hybrid, live webinar approach that helps you build confidence in your teaching skills from your desk or from home.

This program is designed for individuals with a bachelor's degree who have already obtained an Associate Educator License (AEL) through USBE and pairs coursework with real-world teaching experience through an APPEL agreement with your employing school or district in Utah. This agreement will outline which courses you need to take to be eligible for licensure and is made with your school or district's APPEL director. Because USBE has approved our courses, your APPEL director should have access to our updated course list.

Secondary and elementary license candidates must take the core pedagogy courses (WTED 800, 810, 820, 830, and 840). In addition, elementary license candidates must take elementary methods courses, as determined by your APPEL director (WTET 900, 910, and 920, along with others as required).

Once you have finished the courses listed on your APPEL plan and any other licensing requirements from the State, you will work with your district to seek your Professional Educator License from USBE.

Funding of up to 50% is available for eligible participants. Apply here.

If you have any additional questions, call Emily Huillet at 801-957-5423.
