WELCOME to English-As-A-Second Language!

    We are a comprehensive, intensive ESL program, from beginning through college preparatory levels.  Beginning through Level 3 Pre-College Workshop is offered through the Skills Center; Level 4 College ESL is offered through Developmental Education.

LEVELS 1, 2 and 3 - SKILLS CENTER

    Introduction

    The Skills Center ESL classes are open-entry, open-exit, competency-based (non-credit).  Therefore, we accept new students throughout the semester on a weekly basis.

    We offer daytime classes at South City and Redwood Road Campuses for a total of 20 hours per week Monday through Thursday (16 hours for Level 1); and evening classes at South City Campus for a total of 16 hours per week, Monday through Thursday. 

    Students are placed according to their CELSA scores, a test given at the time of application and registration.

    The CELSA is a basic English test.  It is made up of 75 multiple-choice questions in a closed format.  The student chooses the correct word to complete a sentence.  The score on this test places a student into ESL classes at the Skills Center with the following breakdown: 
        Level 1 Beginning: 0-20
        Level 2 Intermediate: 21-39
        Level 3 Advanced: 40-57
        Level 3C Advanced Pre-College: 58+

    Tuition and Fees

    The cost for classes at the Skills Center is $2.25 per hour for residents, and $6.75 per hour for non-residents.  One semester (15 weeks) is equivalent to 300 hours, therefore, the cost for a student enrolled full-time for the full length of 15 weeks is $302.25 if a resident, and $2025 if a non-resident. 

    Other costs include a $35 non-refundable application fee (new students) and a $20 lab fee. International students are assessed an additional $40 administrative fee per semester.

LEVEL 4 - DEVELOPMENTAL EDUCATION

    Introduction

    Level 4 College ESL is intended to prepare students for college level courses and is given college credit.
    Students must have a minimum LOEP score of 72 (LOEP 72-83), or a TOEFL score of 133-172/>450. 

    The LOEP is a computerized test used to place students into Level 4 or other Developmental Education classes.  It consists of three sections (Reading Skills, Sentence Meaning, and Language Use) and the average of those sections is used to give a total score for placement. 

    Below 72: Skills Center ESL (take the CELSA)
    72- 83:  Level 4
    84 and above:  Reading 0900

    Schedule

    The required classes are:
        ESL 1010 College Listening and Speaking (7 credits) and
        ESL 1020 College Reading/Writing (8 credits). 

    Highly recommended ESL classes of 3 credits each include:
        ESL 1030 Conversation
        ESL 1040 Grammar
        ESL 1050 Vocabulary
        ESL 1060 Pronunciation
        ESL 1070 TOEFL Prep
        ESL 1080 Business English

    Please check with the current class schedule for exact times and locations.

    Tuition and Fees

    Tuition for full-time (12-18 credit hours) enrollment for one semester is $1201.75 for residents and $3759.25 for non-residents.

    New students are charged a $35 non-refundable application fee.  International students are assessed an additional $40 administrative fee per semester.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS are welcome in our ESL Program.  Please contact International Student Services for specific requirements.
