Curriculum Exceptions

A curriculum exception is a petition that can be submitted to request a course substitution for a program requirement or to waive a program requirement. As a student, it is your responsibility to seek and submit any and all curriculum exception requests. To submit a curriculum exception you must be a matriculated student. Requests for exceptions and supporting documentation should be submitted at least two weeks prior to your graduation application deadline.

For assistance with this process, you should meet with an Academic Advisor specific to your declared program of study. The curriculum exception process is governed by the Curriculum and Graduations Standards policy.

Before Submitting a Curriculum Exception Request

Please review the following before submitting a curriculum exception request. It is possible that you may need to complete an additional step before submission or that your request might be better suited for another process entirely.

Transfer Coursework: If your request involves transfer coursework, the transfer coursework must be received and evaluated by SLCC prior to submitting your program exception request. For more information on transferring coursework, please visit the Transfer Evaluation website.

Prerequisite Coursework: Curriculum exception requests cannot waive or substitute prerequisites for courses. At SLCC, departments manage the review and process of prerequisite overrides. For more information about requesting a prerequisite override, please contact the department that offers the course.

Credit for Prior Learning (CPL): A process that determines if prior learning or work experience from outside of a collegiate or academic environment is eligible to be applied as college credit. This process is NOT performed through the curriculum exceptions form. To apply for CPL, please visit the Credit for Prior Learning website.

Curriculum Exception Request Categories

  • Course Substitution: A similar course that you completed is substituted for another course required in your program of study.
  • Waiver: A program requirement is waived. You are still required to meet minimum credit/clock hour requirements in your current program of study for graduation. No more than 25% of total program requirements may be waived.
