Earth and Environmental Science

The Earth and Environmental Science department offers degrees for university transfer or degrees/certificates for immediate workforce placement. You will get hands-on experience doing science beyond a typical classroom setting with research projects, field and lab experiences, and applied mapping and remote sensing. Topics include atmospheric and climate science, ecosystem science, geographic information science (GIS), geology, and drones.

Atmospheric and Climate Science Atmospheric and Climate Science uses scientific methods to study and predict what happens in our atmosphere and how it affects the Earth and all living things. This field helps us understand, observe, and forecast atmospheric changes and their impacts on the planet.

Ecosystem Science Ecosystem Science examines the interactions of organisms and their physical environments. This field investigates biodiversity, energy flow through ecosystems, ecosystem services, and develops sustainable resource management practices.

Geographic Information Science (GIS) Geographic Information Science (GIS) uses tools of mapping and GPS to identify and solve scientific problems. This field combines the study of earth and human systems with technology and computer science to analyze and communicate data and information.

Geology Geology is the study of Earth's rocks, minerals, fossils, and water. Geology applies principles from chemistry, physics, math, and biology to understand the composition, structure, history of Earth's materials and processes.

GIS Workforce Geographic Information Science (GIS) uses tools of mapping and GPS to identify and solve scientific problems. An AAS program is designed for workforce students not transferring to a four-year college.

GIS & Drones Certificates Geographic Information Science (GIS) uses tools of mapping and GPS to identify and solve scientific problems. Drones are used in many fields for imagery and data collection. Certificates can be completed on their own or as part of completing the AAS or AS degree.
