On Wednesday, September 24 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Center for Health & Counseling is throwing its annual Health Fair, a three-hour jamboree of all things related to mental and physical upkeep to keep students healthy during their time at SLCC — and beyond.
According to Madison Gregory from the CHC, "and beyond" may be the most important part of the fair's impact. "Our goal is to inform students about health services on campus," she says, "but since they're only here for two years, we want to set them up to find care, counseling, and other types of services in the community once they graduate."
Towards that end, the Gregory and the CHC are populating the Health Fair with resources from inside and outside of SLCC. Students will have the opportunity to get the usual — think blood pressure and the like — and the unusual.
The unusual includes a full-body scan machine that measures height, weight, and maps body composition. It also includes a Huntsman Cancer Institute skin scope, which shows UV damage to raise awareness about sunscreen, and a booth dedicated to alcohol education to help students understand how to protect themselves if they do imbibe.
Health isn't all about harm reduction, though, and the fair proves the point with therapy and service dogs from community partner Golden Healers, chair massages, and a caricature artist to add a bit of healthy, lighthearted humor.
