Innovation and Impact at Undergraduate Projects and Research Conference

Salt Lake Community College is gearing up for one of its most inspiring academic events of the year—the Undergraduate Projects & Research Conference (UP3RC). This annual gathering celebrates student innovation, creativity, and applied learning across disciplines. It’s more than a showcase; it’s a chance to see how classroom knowledge transforms into real-world impact.

Dates and Locations

  • December 10-11 Taylorsville Campus
  • December 13 Miller Campus

What is UP3RC

UP3RC is designed to highlight the power of undergraduate research and experiential learning. Students present projects that reflect months of hard work, curiosity, and collaboration. From science and technology to health and humanities, the conference offers a window into the future of professional practice.

Spotlight on the Physical Therapist Assistant Program

One of the standout participants this year is SLCC’s Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program. These students aren’t just learning in classrooms—they’re already out in the community, completing clinical internships and tackling real-world challenges.

As Justin Carrier, PTA instructor and clinical coordinator, explains:
“Students get real-world experience presenting research. It’s about preparing them for what comes next.”

The capstone projects PTA students present at UP3RC often grow out of their clinical experiences. They identify topics that matter—both to their patients and to their future careers—and dive deep into research and evidence-based practice.

Student Perspective: Kayla’s Journey

For second-year PTA student Kayla, UP3RC is an opportunity to present her capstone project that focuses on low back pain, a condition she frequently encounters during her internship.

“I wanted to dive deep into low back pain because it’s common and complex. This project makes me feel more confident as a future clinician.”

Her advice to future students?
“Don’t pick something easy—choose a topic you’re curious about. It will make you an expert and help your patients.”

Applied Knowledge

These projects aren’t just academic exercises—they’re shaping better care for real people. Students like Kayla are already applying their knowledge in clinics, learning to treat patients with skill and compassion. And with a 100% job placement rate and licensure success, SLCC’s PTA program is setting graduates up for meaningful careers.

Carrier adds:
“Internships and projects show students what professional life looks like and prepare them for conferences and collaboration.”
