Educational Reimbursement Policy

I'm a full-time professor and was hoping to use this great program. But, since I already have my advanced degree, I only wanted to take a couple of graduate-level classes from the U for my professional development and to keep updated with the latest science for the classes I teach. But, I was told I had to be enrolled in a formal program to get the money. I couldn't just take a couple of classes. But that's what would benefit most of us professors who already have Master's and PhDs! This policy needs to be changed so we can use it and for the betterment of our student's education.

My second issue is that of the reimbursement cap of $2500. That does not cover a single graduate-level course at the U. It needs to be adjusted for inflation and be anchored to what a typical course costs nowadays.

Are the Educational benefits for family members of the employee part of a different policy?

Maybe I read poorly, but this sentence sounded too odd not to make a comment -

Section D - Subsection 1 -

b. The application will be in place for the duration of the approved development plan and reimbursement.

Excellent all around - thank you for this proposed update!

The current policy states under IV. Procedures -->A. Eligibility -->2. Institutional Eligibility

“…in addition all credit/non-credit courses offered by Salt Lake Community College not covered by the college Tuition Benefit Policy are eligible.” The new policy includes a certificate program from the U. Why are full-time employees being turned down for courses at SLCC in Workforce if they are part of a certificate program? The policy states ALL credit/non-credit courses. If there are exemptions to "ALL," it should be stated.

If I am reading this correctly, the changes will allow us to take WORKFORCE TRAINING & EDUCATION courses in which receive a certification.

***If I am not reading this correctly, I highly recommend this is added. I recently signed up for the POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY Certification course. This course/certification will help me immensely in my position here at SLCC; it will also help me in my life.

Programs that are eligible for educational reimbursement (4.A.2)

1.  Eligibility of graduate-level courses taken outside of a degree-seeking program at accredited colleges and universities in the United States?

Graduate-level courses taken outside of a degree-seeking program at accredited colleges and universities in the United States are eligible for educational reimbursement. 4.A.2 has been rewritten to include the following:

“graduate-level courses taken outside of a degree-seeking program at accredited colleges and universities in the United States.”

2.  Eligibility of Workforce Training & Education courses?

Section 4.A.2 addresses the programs that are eligible for educational reimbursement. To address confusion regarding workforce training & education courses within the policy, 4.A.2 has been rewritten, and the “credit and non-credit courses” statement has been deleted from the policy.

Maximum Benefit Payable (4.C)

This has been reviewed, and $2500 is the current maximum annual benefit.

Clarification on section 4.D.1.b (now 4.D.5)

To clarify this concept, 4.D.5 (formerly 4.D.1.b) has been rewritten as:

“Once submitted to PWC, the initial application will be valid for the authorized career development plan and reimbursement duration.”
