High School to Healthcare
From the mountain trails to the heart of Cambodia, Kaylee York enjoys adventure and connection. While attending Bingham High School in South Jordan, Utah, she spent her time hiking, enjoying time with friends, and visiting her grandparents in Cambodia. Her path took a defining turn when she enrolled at the Jordan Academy for Technology and Careers (JATC), where she earned her CNA certification. “That’s when everything started to click for me,” she says.
Her CNA teacher, recognizing Kaylee’s potential, introduced her to the Surgical Technology program. “She said I’d be a good fit,” said Kaylee. “I really like learning about surgery and the cool procedures – it’s really fascinating!”
Inspired, she began the Surgical Technology program at the start of her senior year. “The surg tech program teaches pretty cool surgical procedures,” she said. “And you form bonds with your cohort—they become like family.”
It was during the beginning of the program when Kaylee was encouraged to apply for the Metallica Scholars Initiative. “I was so excited to learn I had been awarded through the Metallica Scholars Initiative,” she said. “It has helped out financially and allowed me to concentrate on my studies rather than worry about how I’m going to pay for school.”
Kaylee graduated high school in June 2025 and is on track to receive her Associate of Applied Science in Surgical Technology in December 2025. After graduating SLCC, she plans to attend the University of Utah to pursue a bachelor’s degree. “I’m looking forward to working in a trauma unit or orthopedics, and ultimately attend medical school,” she said. “I can’t thank Metallica enough for giving me this opportunity to get a head start on my career!”
