Program Overview

The Meter Apprenticeship program is designed to provide related technical instruction for students currently employed as apprentice meter technicians in the electric power industry. A meter technician installs and maintains single and poly-phase electric meters and performs meter maintenance and accuracy testing in accordance with Meter Quality System requirements and industry standards. Meter technicians may also work on substations and co-generation metering. The program covers topics such as the safe installation, calibration, maintenance, and repair of electric meters and associated equipment.

What you will learn

  • Demonstrate proper safety protocols including first aid, PPE, and hazardous energy control procedures
  • Define and calculate metering terms, circuit values, and AC/DC electrical theory
  • Install, test, and troubleshoot single-phase and polyphase watt-hour meters
  • Analyze and interpret data from three-phase meter tests, diagrams, and test instruments
  • Communicate effectively with customers regarding power usage, billing, and energy concerns

What you will learn

Demonstrate ability to apply APPA, NEC, and OSHA safety standards and protocols when working with electricity, heavy-duty equipment, personal protective gear, and chemicals. Apply principles of electrical theory to the distribution and metering of electrical power. Safely install, maintain, and repair single phase and poly-phase meters. Accurately perform industry calculations including voltage, current, resistance, impedance, capacitance as they relate to different types of circuits. Demonstrate the safe and correct use of line test equipment, meters, and associated line construction equipment.
