ADA Title II Digital Accessibility Rule
The Department of Justice (DOJ) has introduced a new regulation under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) that affects public higher education institutions. This rule states that Salt Lake Community College’s digital content must be accessible by April 2026. To comply with these requirements, everyone at Salt Lake Community College must learn and implement digital accessibility best practices.
Compliance Standards
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 serve as the technical standard for adhering to the rule.
The Title II rules apply to:
- Web content and applications
- Course content
- Electronic documents
- Video content
- Social media
- Mobile applications
- Third-party content
Exceptions
While most content must meet the new requirements, there are a few exceptions:
- Content posted on a site or app from a third party
- Archived web content
- Electronic documents on a site or app before the rule's date that will no longer be used
- Social media posts made before the rule's date
- Password-protected documents for specific individuals

Digital Accessibility Courses
The Accessibility & Disability Services team has worked with the SLCC Online & eLearning Services team to create a Digital Accessibility Credential course. You can register for this course at any time using the registration system. You will complete assignments, receive feedback, and be able to ask questions as you learn about accessibility for Word, PowerPoint, PDF, and Canvas.
The Digital Accessibility course will be continually updated as technologies change, new material support is added, and instructions are refined. You may access the latest information in the open Public Digital Accessibility Course. We encourage you to reference this course as you make your digital materials accessible for all learners.
