Modification to Attendance and Assignment Deadlines Guidelines

Modification of Attendance and Assignments is given when the student’s episodic disability flare ups resulting in a disability-related episodic event which prohibits the student from participating in class.

This accommodation will impact the student’s class in the following ways:

1. If the student has an assignment or test/quiz due the date of the student’s disability-related event and prohibits the student from participating in class then the assignment or test/quiz deadline will be extended.
2. If there are any participation points given during the class, then those points will be waived for the day.

Modification of Attendance and Assignments accommodation is reviewed by a committee and requires documentation showing the severity and the episodic nature of the disability. Concerns from faculty regarding this accommodation are reviewed in the fundamental alteration process.

Considerations to keep in mind when implementing a Modification of Attendance and Assignments

• This accommodation is only during the time the student is experiencing a disability related event.
• Students are not required to provide doctor’s notes to faculty members for absences covered under this accommodation.
• The accommodation does not cover non-disability related illness (such as flu) or non-medical reasons as to why the student is absent.
• The accommodation is determined on a class-by-class basis.
• All assignments and testing need to be completed by the end of the semester unless the student and professor are working cooperatively on a contract for an “incomplete grade” in the class.
• If attendance is determined as essential part of the course, then this accommodation may not be approved for the course and the student will need to attend as outlined in the syllabus. For more information please review the fundamental alteration process here: Fundamental Alteration | SLCC.
• This accommodation is not applied retroactively; accommodations are in place when the student and faculty receive the letter of accommodation.

ADS Advisor’s Responsibilities

Before a disability-related event

• The advisor will approve and send out the accommodation letter stating Modification to Attendance and Assignment Deadlines along with a link to this document.
• If the instructor believes that applying this accommodation would fundamentally alter the essential functions of the course, ADS advisor should assist instructor with the fundamental alteration process.

After a disability-related event

• The ADS advisor will resolve any concerns with faculty and the student regarding the Modification to Attendance and Assignments accommodation.

Student’s Responsibilities

Before a disability-related event

• The student will review their accommodation letter and Modification to Attendance and Assignments Guidelines.

After a disability-related event

• After an episodic event, the student will contact the instructor, within 48 hours, stating that they need to use their Modification Accommodation. If they are unable to notify their instructor within the timeline, they will contact their instructor and their advisor for more information.
• The student is responsible for learning the information they missed while absent.
• The student will turn in all assignments, quizzes, and tests by the new deadline agreed upon. If they turn in any assignments, tests, or quizzes after the deadline the student understands that those assignments, tests, or quizzes will be graded as if late.
• If the student missed any graded in-class discussions or assignments the student will communicate with the instructor to request an alternative assignment as makeup work.
• The student will work with their ADS advisor about any concerns they may have regarding this accommodation.

Instructor’s Responsibilities

Before a disability-related event

• The instructor will review the accommodation letter.
• The instructor may work with the advisor to determine reasonable extensions.

After a disability-related event

• The instructor will receive notice from the student that they need to use their modification accommodation.
• The instructor will notify the student of the new deadline.
• The instructor will also waive any participation points that are normally subtracted for the absence.
• If the instructor determined that an alternative assignment can be given, then the instructor will give an alternative assignment for any missed class discussions or projects that were given when the student was absent due to a disability-related event.
• The instructor will work with the ADS advisor if there are any concerns regarding the Modification to Attendance and Assignments accommodation.
