From Classroom to Community!

The Community-Engaged Learning (i.e., service-learning) Program is facilitated by the Engaged Learning Office within Academic Affairs at SLCC. Participate in community-engaged learning courses to connect with your community! You’ll grasp course material and see its real-world applications firsthand. Acquire practical experience, develop your resume, and expand your networks while progressing toward your degree or certificate. Engage with critical social issues and create meaningful change!

“SL is a form of experiential education where students engage in activities that address human and community needs together with structured opportunities internally designed to promote student learning and development” (Jacoby, 1996, p. 5)."

Examples include:

  • Promoting literacy in afterschool or community programs as a part of your English or Communications class.
  • Working with a non-profit community partner or governmental group to identify potential research topics in Business or History.
  • Participate in local advocacy efforts focused on important social causes as a part of a Sociology or Marketing class.

Why Community-Engaged Learning

For general questions or information:

Community-Engaged Learning Student Fund (CELSF)

The Community-Engaged Learning Student Fund (CELSF) is for students enrolled in community-engaged learning classes and select other programs. These students may request funding up to $500 to offset costs directly related to their community-engaged learning projects! Just submit a proposal explaining the details of your project and how it relates to your course learning objectives to apply for funding. If you need assistance writing your proposal essay questions the SLCC Student Writing & Reading Center is an excellent resources and students are able to schedule both online and in-person appointments. Approved funds can be used for consumable goods only such as food, school supplies or even travel costs! Contact the Engaged Learning Coordinator if you have any questions.

Open for Academic Year 2025 - 2026

The Community-Engaged Learning Student Fund (CELSF) (previously known as the Service-Learning Student Project Fund) is designed for Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) students enrolled in designated community-engaged learning (CEL) classes. Students may request funding to offset costs directly related to their community-engaged learning projects. CEL instructors and Engaged Learning staff must approve the project. Students may request up to $500 per course, project or program and must submit a final report. We encourage students to be creative when planning a project. Work closely with the course instructor, staff, and community partner to explore the range of possibilities.

I. Students may request up to $500 per course, project or program, per semester, and must submit a final report.

  • Consumable products are goods that can be used up for example: paper, pencils, fabric for blankets, craft supplies, hygiene products, soil or lumber for garden boxes, shipping costs, etc.
  • Non-consumable products may be purchased if they are SLCC branded.
    • Non-consumable products are classified as any item that cannot be used up or discarded such as electronic devices, musical instruments, board games, microscopes or other equipment. Items such as this must be SLCC branded.
  • Students can purchase products from any reliable source.
    • All drink purchases need to go through Gina Chase in Auxiliary Services. Please coordinate with the Engaged Learning Specialist to make these purchases.
  • Travel costs can include hotels, registration fees, or flight costs.
  • If students are requesting funding for conferences (travel expenses, registration fees), then it must be in participation with a community-engaged learning course, or an Engaged Department (Dental Hygiene, Occupational Therapy, & English).
  • Students may request funding for travel expenses for a Study Abroad program if the course associated with that program is designated as community-engaged learning. For example, Costa Rica Study Abroad Program, Anthropology 2083.

II. Award Limitations

  • If multiple students from a single course are requesting funding, note that only $500.00 will be approved for the entire class. For example, if five students are requesting funding for various projects done in an English 2010 class, a maximum of $500.00 can be awarded for that class for that semester.
  • Courses and their corresponding lab course are considered one class. Example: Dental Hygiene 1140/1150 or OTA 1120/1130.
  • The Engaged Learning Office has the discretion to deny or approve requests over $500.00.
  • A maximum of $700 may be awarded to Engaged Departments (Dental Hygiene, Occupational Therapy, & English) for student projects/travel outside the structure of a designated course for the academic year.
  • If multiple classes are working together on a single project a limit of $500.00 will be awarded for that project.

III. Student Obligations

  • Students are required to include their community-engaged learning experience on their ePortfolio.
  • Students are required to submit a final report, or they will be subject to fines and/or academic holds.
  • Each proposal must be approved by at least one faculty, staff or community partner. If you have submitted a proposal, please remind your reviewers to approve your proposal.
  • Students are recommended to plan their project with an approved Thayne Center Community Partner, Dental Hygiene Clinic, or Occupational Therapy Clinic. Projects in association with other departments at SLCC such Bruin Pantries or SLCC Preschool may be accepted.
  • Coordination with the Engaged Learning Specialist is key to a successful project. Please contact the Engaged Learning Specialist with any questions, clarification or payments needed to complete your project.
