The English, Linguistics, and Writing Studies (ELWS) department offers two transfer degrees: English Studies AS and Writing Studies AS.

In addition to our two ELWS degrees, you will find courses that expand your skills in writing, reading, and critical thinking. You will learn how to use language to communicate effectively in a variety of contexts, like academic, creative, business, and technical fields. As a department, we are designated as an Engaged Department, encouraging you to be active citizens and community members.

Who should take ELWS courses?

In short, you! Just about every student at SLCC will take English courses to fulfill their composition requirement, and the department also offers a rich selection of engaging courses to fulfill several general education requirements (HU, IG, HR, and DV).

ELWS courses also prepare you to:

  • navigate media systems like print and digital publications
  • study language in academic, professional, civic, and personal situations
  • meet the writing needs of business and industry

What else does ELWS offer?

  • Learn book arts, print and digital publishing in the Publication Center
  • Get published in or take a class to produce Folio, SLCC’s literary and arts magazine
  • Earn the Writing Certificate of Proficiency, demonstrating advanced reading and writing skills—you might be surprised how much other programs value those skills.
