Through Her Eyes

This collection of photographs depicting life in Utah was taken by 20 female photojournalists from around the world and curated by Salt Lake City based freelance documentary, editorial and reportage photographer Kim Raff. It was exhibited in the Eccles Gallery at SLCC from March 8 - April 11, 2017 and was later acquired as part of the college’s Permanent Art Collection.

Group Artist Statement

The names printed everyday under news photographs around the world belong to people whose craft so often illuminate the lives of those who are beyond our physical borders and personal boundaries. They are the names of the women and men who, in the midst of conflict and confusion try to capture moments that compel us to action or compassion or reflection.

But for all the balanced coverage that the best news organizations make a mission of seeking out and revealing, it is only in recent decades they've pushed for a gender equality within their own ranks. It was not until the early 1980s when the first female photojournalist was hired by The Salt Lake Tribune and women began to tell the story of Utah.

In this gallery of images that make up “Through Her Eyes”, you will find a collection of craft and vision as produced by 20 female photojournalists who take on the day-in day-out grind of minding the people's business.

Group Bio

“Through Her Eyes” showcases the work of more than 20 women photojournalists whose careers have called them to document the American West. This exhibition highlights 20-plus years of images made for 8 news organizations throughout the state. Some of the artists showcased made homes in Utah, while others have tumble-weeded through the landscape on their way to places like Alaska and Germany. Others have found their work featured in The New York Times or joined the staff of the Chicago Tribune. What unites each of them is their dedication to capturing the emerging and diverging culture of Utah and its place amidst the greater Inter-mountain West.
