Chris Serrano, left, and Clifton Webb, right, embrace after being married as people wait in line to get licenses outside of the marriage division of the Salt Lake County Clerk's Office in Salt Lake City. In late December 2013 a federal judge ruled Utah’s ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional making it possible for hundreds of gay couples to legally wed in one of the most conservative states in the country. Over 1,300 marriage licenses were issued before the U.S. Supreme Court granted a stay while the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals hears the case.
Utah’s ruling was the first and many other states followed suit after the Supreme Court made its controversial ruling striking down the Defense of Marriage Act but it wasn't until June of 2015 when Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in favor of same sex marriage that it guaranteed the right nationwide.
