Requirement to Carry Documentation of Status

Under U.S. immigration law, you must always carry proof of your immigration registration while in the U.S.. For most international students, this requirement is already satisfied through the issuance of a Form I-94 when admitted to the U.S.

The law is not clear whether you should carry original documents or copies of those original documents. However, it is generally advisable to carry, at a minimum, copies of the following key lawful status documents including paper or electronic versions on phones or tablets. If you choose to carry your original documents, we strongly recommend that you take necessary precautions to keep those original documents secure.

  • Your most recent Form I-94 Arrival/Departure Record
  • Your Form I-20 (for F-1 & M-1 students)
  • The biographical page of your passport
  • Your U.S. visa page (if applicable)

Dear SLCC International Students,

At Salt Lake Community College, you are a valued member of our community. We are committed to fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment where you can learn, grow, and fully participate in campus life.

In alignment with new state requirements, we are sharing important information about transnational repression and how to seek support if you experience it.

What is transnational repression?

Transnational repression occurs when a foreign government or affiliated group attempts to influence, intimidate, or control individuals while they are outside their home country—such as here in the United States.

This may include:

  • Harassment, intimidation, or attempts to silence your voice
  • Threats or acts of physical harm
  • Monitoring or targeting through digital platforms or social media
  • Pressure or threats toward your family or contacts in your home country
  • Financial coercion or restrictions
  • Misuse of legal, administrative, or immigration-related processes

These actions are not acceptable and may violate U.S. law.

What should you do?

If you believe you are experiencing this type of behavior:

  • If you are in immediate danger, call 911
  • Report concerns to SLCC Campus Police 801-957-3800 or local law enforcement
  • Reach out to International Student Services (ISS) for support and guidance
  • You may also contact federal authorities, such as the FBI, for serious concerns involving threats or coercion
