Succeeding in the Classroom

In college, you have a lot more freedom (and responsibility). Only you can decide to attend class regularly and be prepared to participate. But sometimes it’s hard to stay motivated. To avoid this, consider the following:

  1. Plan your class times wisely – Be easy on yourself. If you are not a morning person don’t sign up for a 7:00 am class. If you will be traveling from your job give yourself plenty of time for traveling to and from class.
  2. Don’t make it optional!
  3. Plan your day – By having your class listed in your calendar you don’t have an excuse not to attend.

The single most important thing you can do in college is attend every class. Once you’re in class the tips below can help you make the most of your classroom experience:

  1. Be in class! – Show up both physically and mentally to each class session.
  2. Do your homework – In college, you are expected to complete readings and homework prior to class in order to understand the lecture and participate in the discussion. This also allows you to ask critical questions and get helpful answers on the spot.
  3. Adapt – Not every instructor teaches the same. Learning to adapt to how your instructor teaches will help you.
  4. Be ready to learn – Have your homework done, bring all the materials you will need, be well rested, put your phone away, and be there mentally and physically.
  5. Participate – By actively engaging in the lecture or answering questions you keep your mind focused and it keeps the class interesting.
