Yellow Belt Certification:

Course Objective: For students to learn the fundamentals of Lean Six Sigma and immediately be able to immediately work in a Lean environment. A graduate from this course is able to understand the basic expectations of a Lean organization and their role within it

Course Description: This course introduces students to the basic concepts of Lean Six Sigma. Students will learn a brief history of Lean and Six Sigma, followed by discussion of the structured problem solving and improvement process. This course introduces each phase of the DMAIC stage gate process, and students will learn the basic concepts of each.

There is a total of 8 classroom hours.

Green Belt Certification

Course Objective: For students to learn the foundations of Lean Six Sigma and develop problem solving, process improvement, and facilitator skills. A graduate from this course is able to effectively implement solutions that result in lower costs, faster delivery, higher quality, and increased safety of operations.

Course Description: Project based curriculum that leverages the use of simulations, case studies, and team dynamics for the most effective learning experience. Students learn and practice the skills necessary to map, analyze, and improve work processes, implement change management strategies, apply structured problem-solving methods, apply root cause analysis tools, and implement proven Lean Six Sigma countermeasures.

There is a total of 30 classroom hours with an additional 4-5 hours of study to be completed after class hours. The previous day’s content will be reviewed at the beginning of days 2-5. A final team presentation and submission of project documentation is required for course completion.

Black Belt Certification

Course Objective: For students to advance their knowledge, skills, and abilities to lead change initiatives and strategic planning sessions at the executive or strategic level of their organization.

Course Description: Project based curriculum that leverages the use of simulations, case studies, and student interactions for the most effective learning experience. Students learn and practice the skills necessary to implement statistical process control (SPC), facilitate and use various strategic planning tools and methods, optimize machine up-time rates, alleviate organizational bottlenecks, calculate various financial metrics, and to lead change initiatives in any organization.

There is a total of 30 classroom hours with additional 10-20 hours of reading, studying and homework to be completed prior to course and during instructional week (see homework schedule). Students will be required to lead graded discussions and presentations (see syllabus).

Prerequisite: Lean, Six Sigma or Lean Six Sigma Green Belt (or equivalent) training or certification. Including, but not limited to: training or certification from employer, job training programs, private training centers, universities, or online courses.

About the Instructor:

Craig Johnson has 20+ years of experience in continuous improvement, manufacturing engineering, and professional learning and development. His background includes industrial, aerospace, and defense manufacturing from multiple sectors. He currently serves as the Learning and Development Manager at RYAM, Chief Educator at Utah Lean Six Sigma Training Center, and the Director of Certification at the American Association for Lean Six Sigma Certification. He is a graduate of Weber State University, with a BS degree in Manufacturing Engineering Technology. He was initially introduced to Lean Six Sigma in 2004 and is a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt. He has had a passion for teaching for almost his entire life and loves to “teach people to fish”. His instructional design background makes him an effective and engaging instructor.
