Center for Languages Update

2023 Fall Semester Schedule:

  • 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
Tutoring can be either online or in-person but must be scheduled 24 hours in advance. To schedule a tutoring session, click "Tutors" from the menu on the left of this page.
  • CFL Proficiency test schedule: Monday- Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • CFL Placement test schedule: Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

We prefer both Proficiency and Placement tests be scheduled in advance. The reason for this is that walk-in tests create some difficulty for us since we only allow two people to take the test at the same time due to Covid-19. Email lin.chen@slcc.edu to schedule a test or to get more information about the tests.

Who We Are

The CFL is a diverse and learner-friendly interactive language center. We support students in experiencing multiple cultures and becoming global citizens while promoting language learning through individualized tutoring and technology.

The CFL is shared by three SLCC programs: American Sign Language, ASL-English Interpreting, and World Languages.

What We Offer

  • Free in-person and virtual tutoring with native or near-native users of the language you are studying. SLCC offers language classes in American Sign Language, Chinese, French, Italian, Japanese, Nahuatl, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese.
  • Free/low-cost placement tests, enabling you to meet your language goals more quickly and inexpensively.
  • Low-cost proficiency testing, so advanced speakers can meet their language requirement quickly and at little expense.
  • A dedicated computer room, with access to printers and a break room.
  • A workspace where you are welcome to spend time to focus.
  • A selection of films and other resources in the language you are studying. Borrow a headset from the main desk and find a computer to watch any of the DVDs.
