Religious Accommodations

Salt Lake Community College supports students' sincerely held religious and conscience beliefs. Students may request reasonable accommodations when a religious and conscience belief conflicts with an academic requirement. Accommodations may include, but are not limited to, an excused absence, rescheduling an exam or quiz, an alternative assignment, or an adjusted deadline.

Accommodations are provided when they do not fundamentally alter the essential requirements of the course, program, or degree.

How to Request a Religious Accommodation

Step 1: Submit a Written Request

Students must submit a written request using the following form:

Student Religious & Sincerely Held Beliefs Accommodations Request Form

  • Requests should be made as early as possible, and when feasible, no later than 30 days before the accommodation is needed.
  • To support timely review, students are strongly encouraged to submit requests at least two weeks in advance.
  • Students may request more than one accommodation per course.

Step 2: Instructor Review & Interactive Process

After a request is submitted:

  • The Director of Student Support will review the request and serve as the primary point of coordination for the accommodation process.
  • The Director of Student Support will notify the course instructor and help facilitate communication, clarify questions, and coordinate any necessary discussions between the student and the instructor.
  • When needed, the Director of Student Support may engage the student and instructor to gather additional information or to explore reasonable accommodation options.
  • A written response will be provided to the student within five (5) business days of receiving the request.

Accommodation requests are handled confidentially and shared only as necessary to evaluate, implement, or review the request, as permitted by law.

Point of Contact for Accommodations

For questions, assistance, or help navigating the accommodation process, students may contact:

If an Accommodation Is Denied

If it is determined that a requested accommodation would create a fundamental alteration to the course, program, or degree, the student will receive a written explanation along with information about how to appeal the decision.

Appeals & Neutral Arbiter Review

Students may appeal a denied accommodation request to the neutral arbiter.

Candida Mumford
Dean of Students & Associate Vice President
Phone: 801 957 5027
Email: candida.mumford@slcc.edu

The Dean of Students serves as the neutral arbiter for religious and conscience belief accommodation appeals.

  • Appeal decisions are issued within five (5) business days, when possible.
  • Written decisions are provided to both the student and the instructor.

Non Retaliation Statement

SLCC strictly prohibits retaliation against any student for requesting or using a religious or conscience belief accommodation. If you believe you have experienced retaliation, discrimination, or harassment related to a religious or conscience belief accommodation request, please submit a report using the Campus Discrimination, Harassment, or Retaliation Reporting Form.
