SLCC STARS Dancers

SLCC Stars Dancers is a commercial dance competition team and professional entertainment partnership between Salt Lake Community College and the SLC Stars Basketball organization.

The SLCC Stars Dancers have two areas of focus: 1) Provide high-quality performances and other in-game entertainment at select SLC Stars Basketball games at the Delta Center and Maverik Center; and 2) Compete in the NJCAA Division of the National Dance Alliance Championships in Daytona, FL in the areas of Hip-Hop, Jazz, Pom, and/or Spirit Rally.

Membership is by invitation only. Invitations to join the SLCC Stars Dancers will be based on performance at the mandatory Recruitment Clinic July 16 at 5:00pm (more details below).

Students invited to join the team will need to enroll in DANC 2000: STARS Dancers Co-op, a 1-credit course each Fall and Spring semester, along with DANC 2000: Collegiate Dance Competition each Spring semester (a total of 3 credit hours in the academic year).

Dancers must be at least 18 years old and out of high school.

Schedule

  • Training Camp: August 18–21, 12:00–5:00pm, Redwood & South City Campus
  • Rehearsal Tuesdays at Redwood 5:00–8:00 P.M. (Fall & Spring semester)
  • Rehearsal Fridays at South 9:00–11:50 A.M. (Fall & Spring semester)
  • Additional rehearsal time Spring semester (TBD)
  • Approximately 8 game nights various evenings November–March (schedule TBD)
  • Assist with at least 3 “Junior Clinics”
  • Travel to Daytona, FL for Nationals for 6 days in April

Cost

  • Tuition for a total of 3 credit hours
  • SLCC Stars Dancers is a student club with associated Club Dues of $30/semester
  • Travel and Competition fees (estimated): $1,000 (a portion may be offset with fundraising)

All Stars Dancers are expected to fully participate in fundraising efforts such as “junior” clinics and various team-related marketing and sponsorship campaigns.

The SLCC Stars Dancers Recruitment Clinic is an opportunity to train in Pom, Jazz and Hip-Hop on an intermediate to advanced level, and to potentially secure an invitation to compete in these areas at the collegiate level as an SLCC Stars Dancer.

Required Dress

  • Half-tops or sports bras & spanks or leggings. Men: Tanks or Ts.
    • All dancers may wear a t-shirt for the outdoor run
  • Running shoes and non-marking dance or athletic shoes
  • Performance-ready makeup and hair away from your face

Expectations

  • Clinic will move quickly and run approximately 3 hours
  • Fitness warmup will include an outdoor run (Dancers must have a <12-min. mile)
  • Advanced skills in hip hop, jazz, and pom with the ability to learn & execute choreography quickly
  • Advanced technique center- and across-the-floor (style versatility, leaps/jumps, turns)
  • Dancers must demonstrate:
    • Advanced Turn Sequence (at least 8 consecutive turns followed by a triple pirouette); and
    • A combination of at least 3 of the following skills:
      • Front or Side Aerial
      • Back Handspring or Back Tuck
      • Solid Front Headspring
      • Solid Kip Up
      • Advanced Tumbling (not listed)
      • 540 or other Advanced Jumps

DANC 2000: Stars Dancers Co-op

Course Description

A cooperative education program that provides SLCC students with an active learning experience to apply what they are learning in the SLCC School of Arts to a professional work setting and provide SLC Stars with high-quality performances and other in-game entertainment.

DANC 2000 is an invitation-only course and requires department approval prior to student enrollment. Invitations are based on performance at the SLCC Stars Dancers Recruitment Clinic.

Student Learning Objectives

Supervised work experience in professional settings related to student’s dance studies underscoring connections between the classroom and employment.

Credit awarded for successful completion of specified learning objectives that provide new learning.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will demonstrate an increased ability to use the unique language of dance and movement technique as a means of entertainment.
  2. Students will express an understanding of dance, the body, and its physicality as a profound form of communication in performance, writing, and movement assessment.
  3. Students will create and execute new movement compositions and perform the works in professional settings related to their career or educational goals.
  4. Students will articulate, in writing, connections between specific skills learned in the classroom and related job field praxis.
  5. Students will exhibit increased movement skills, concentration, artistic expression, and stage presence in large venue performance.
  6. Students will critically reflect on their preparation and presentation experiences and articulate the influence the co-op has had on their personal, academic, and professional goals and trajectory.
